    shorten a rear?

Anyone know anything about making a rear end shorter? Probably significantly shorter. It's probably a 3.08 open rear, but I'll probably end up welding the axles together if I can to make some cheap posi. Don't worry, this isn't going on a car.

You mean narrowing it? It can be done, find a shop that specializes in drivelines. it requires carefully measuring and welding.

I know it can be done. I want to do it at home. It's not going to handle much power...so it doesn't need to be exact or perfect. As long as its short and it holds

You will need to cut the axle tubes and reweld them back together, getting it perfectly straight. Most companies that do this(Strange, Moser, etc.) use a jig to keep everything aligned correctly.
As far as welding the axles together, just get what they call a spool instead of a differential. The ring gear bolts to it and it looks like a diff but without gears or anything and the axles just slide into both sides.
Good luck cutting the axles though...I think they are something like 57 rockwell or whatever....but anywho they are extremely hard so I hope you have a torch to cut them with because a saw will take forever unless it's a cold saw or has some special blade.
Ordinarily I would say don't do it but you said it is not for a car but for a project of some kind....

I might be better off using a rear from a Mustang. They're almost 10" narrower already.

Mustang or Mark VII, these Lincolns use narrower axles too, and may be easier and cheaper to locate and have.

Do they share a rear end? The Mk 7 is about 2.5" wider than a fox 'stang. But still 6" narrower than a panther.

Don't know if they share the axle, but I know the Mark VII one is much narrower than the Panther one.
