at scottfest I bought an electric fan because i was looking at my car (the 97), saw the clutch fan, and just assumed that was it.

well, tonite i was looking at it closer, and that's not the case. My car has both a clutch fan and an electric fan.

why?

the only thing I can think of as to why is for when the a/c is on.

my 94 caprice had both.... and the bitch still overheated. i would assume you could get a newer, better electric fan and be better off, but you might wanna hang onto the old fan just in case you need to go back to that setup

The electric fan comes on when the A/C is on or when the engine temp climbs over 220*. Ford started using it in '96 when they found out that R134a doesn't work as well as R12 at low speed. The auxillary fan increases air flow through the condensor to make up for it.

ok, that's what I figured it was for, just wanted to verify :)

I can run a beefier efan and do away with the clutch fan then :)

I'm running a '96 auxillary fan as my only cooling fan. It's run by a stand alone controller and works great.

Yeah, I just have my electric fan as well. Use the electric fan for the 84.

were you going to use the fans as puller or pusher?

And yes ford and mzda are notorious for that. At leas in the newer cars they pull timming when the car heats up before turning on the e fans. IIRC mazda 6 pulled timming at like 210 and somewhere around 220 is when the fans innitialy kicked on. On the mercury using water wetter and Xcal2, I was able to combat that.

well, i took off the clutch fan. It didnt get too hot. was a little hotter than with the clutch fan on.

I think I'm going to get a controller like 93 marquis has though to get it to turn on at a lower temp.
