    Another Choke thread

I've been meaning to ask about this for a while. Currently whenever i start my car, it will idle high for a minute or 2 until you hit the gas again, just how i think a choke is supposed to work, except it idles really really high. The thing is, it annoys the shit out of me, i just want to start the car and go, not wait for the damn thing to slow down. My old '84 never did this at all, it just started and would idle at a normal speed. My current '84 would start and idle normally, even in the winter, until just a few months ago. Now it idles high weather it is cold, or warm. I replaced the little choke heater/thermostat thing with a few different ones and tried adjusting it but it doesn't seem to change anything. The wiring to it is also fine. I am starting to think something is sticking somewhere but i cant find what, so i am still suspecting the choke. Can i just take the thermostat thing off and test it and if it still idles high i know its something else. And if i take it off and it idles normally, will it do any harm just leaving it off?

if its idling high becuase the choke is catching too high, you will be able to tell by looking at it if the choke is holding it open.
You can use your fingers to release the catch and the idle should fall back down.
Twising out the idle-looking screw didnt help?

Well i spend today going over the car fixing all sorts of stuff including this issue. I finally fixed it with a combination of lots of carb cleaner on everything, rotating the choke heater counter clockwise about 50 degrees and adjusting the choke idle screw thing. Just adjusting one or the other doesn't seem to help anything, they both need to be in perfect spots to get it to work right. I also fixed some MAJOR vacuum leaks that i didn't even know i had. I'm surprised the car ran well at all with leaks that big. I think it fixed my decreased gas mileage i was having that i had just attributed to the cold weather. The car runs much better now, throttle response is better too, not sure what i did to fix that, probably all the linkage i cleaned up? Well i'm just happy its running good now, cant wait until summer when i can get some real work done

Yeah the choke stuff often gets sludged up and sticks and junk in the cold. My throttle linkage on my car was sticking too, had to clean and oil it up. Vacuum leaks are also fun on the wallet.
