      Looks like a hearse. The early Merc wagons had the extended taillites like that.

        its a hearse, but ive never seen thos, it was unclear to me that they existed!

            Yep, that's where the door handle is, but I've never seen the extended taillights like that. Gives a person ideas for funky custom taillight treatments. It also looks like that car was delivered with no roof rack - I thought the rack was always standard equipment!

                a mercury family truckster

                1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt

                          that would be a thacker hearse. I have one, or should I say whats left of one. It was a base model wagon with a vinyl top, and a big nasty piece of sheetmetal clumsily riveted over the back side windows. They left the glass in place, and glued headliner material to the inside of it. Mine is an 85, but it had the ordinary cp taillights on it, with no extensions.
                          Owner of the only known 5 speed box wagon with a lift kit.
                          AKA, Herkimer the Hillbilly SUV.

                            1979 and 1980 were the only two years that mercury had the tail light extension on the tailgate my is an 81 and there is none although i love the look and would love to find some. they do not appear in and 81 foed books that i have and i have most.
