    Tranny Extraction

I know this isn't for a Panther...well, kind of is....but anyway, I've never done this and I need to know how to do it.
My friend wrecked his '97 Tbird and he said I can have the tranny for the 4R70W gears...
so, all I need to do is pull the tranny out...but I've never done it before
how do I get it out?
    what do I unbolt?
I imagine I unbolt it from the bellhousing and pull Driveshaft out, but isn't there some trnny mounts somewhere?
    what am I missing?
any pics of this stuff would be grreat!
    thanks guys

should be pretty obvious when you get under there....trans linkage, crossmember, wiring, TQ converter bolts- or you can just unbolt the bellhousing and pull the trans out without the converter, it's just messy.

and AOD/4R70W with fluid and converter easily weighs over 100#s, even with two people you will need a jack. They almost never come out smoothly, you will have to fight it to get it free.

I highly recommend a large floor jack with a block of large wood on the pan or a real tranny jack. You ain't gonna be able to hold it up no way without a jack of some sort. Jackstands won't work - they aren't easy to lower or roll .

I did a tranny swap on my car and I'd never did one before.

Yeah, they're heavy and awkward but its not really complex to get it out. Should be 2 bolts or so holding the mount on to the tailshaft. rest of the stuff has been mentioned. Its really not held in with a whole bunch, its just big and clunky to deal with.

But there is always something you forget to unhook, be it a speedo sensor, the neutral safety switch, the cooler lines or the torque converter.

You mean you're supposed to unhook that stuff? I though the proper method was 'yank' ?

I actually forgot to pull the converter bolts when I pulled my motor. Luckily Scott was paying more attention than I was.

The manual trans in the Capri is 80# wet and it took my cuz and I with two jacks and a LOT of cuss words to get the thing out and back in. I would recommend a large floor jack and thick pieces of Plywood and four large jack stands plus two people and a lot of tools. Oh and you will know what the wood is for once you start in on it.

You might see if you can rent or borrow a transmission jack. They have four casters and a strap to help hold the big silly thing in place, and raise and lower from right there with your 1/2" ratchet. Worked pretty good when swapping out the C4 in the '79, though I did manage to drop the transmission once while my friends weren't nearby, so if I did it again I'd probably add one of my ratcheting cargo straps to help make the job a little less exciting.

I assume the T-bird has the trans crossmember secured with two longitudinal bolts like on a Mustang; in that case, the easiest path might be to unbolt that from the body and only worry about trans mount itself if it's being a pain. If you want to do the pull junkyard-style, you can always cut the wires and linkages, but they do unbolt pretty easily once you start poking around under there.

Other than that stuff and yanking the driveshaft (need a 13mm 12-point for that, I think), it's just the four torque converter bolts (I've found they at least sometimes come off without having to have a flywheel-turning tool - use a big breaker bar and yank on it sharply or something) and the six bellhousing bolts. I kind of hate bellhousing bolts because they can be awkward to get to, but with some patience and maybe a bent-flex-handle ratchet it'll happen.

The driveshaft bolts are 12 point 12mm, you have to have a wrench, a ratchet won't work.

The thunderbird is a MN-12 which shares almost nothing with a Mustang.
