    Been thinking... about my stereo.

I've been thinking about removing my subs and box from my trunk and selling them...

They've been cutting out lately (bad wire somewhere), and the subs are base Sony's with an off-brand amp that's been overheated by my sister countless times.

I figure it would also help alot with reducing weight.

On the other hand... when it does work... it sounds great inside the car, lol.

    Opinions?

Overheated amp probably means you have wired your system at too low of an impedance

How many subs do you have?

How many voice coils do they have (prob one or two)

Whats the impedance for each voice coil (8,4,2????)

How is it wired??? Series??? Parallel???

If the amp gets hot and shuts off due to thermal overload something’s not right

Modern high current 12v amps are designed to run wide open (+4dbu) without overheating (at their rated impedance)

Most decent amps will put up with 2 ohms even 1

Really good amps will go down to .5ohms

how big are they?? you could downgrade to 10's, or even two good 8"s can produce enough bass to feel. and get a good amp. Use money from selling the other stuff.

NO IDEA on all the specs, lol, but they're 12's, lol. Only 800 watt speakers, 1000 watt amp. I never had any problems with it myself, but my sister did because she had no idea what she was doing lol.

Amp is atleast 10 years old... and has seen ALOT of abuse. The box is newer, along with everything else. I'm going to check the main wire tomorrow and see if it's making any connection at the battery.

with base model subs you wont see much of a weight savings by removing them. The majority of the weight is normally in the speaker boxes. all the boxes i build are made form 3/4" MDF, my 12's are in individual boxes, each box is about 40#s + the 25# speaker

If you tell me a budget I can help you build a cheap setup that will sound better than your old one

Sealed enclosure w/ about 1 cube you will be happy! You can even mount the enclosure on the top shelf. I can design the enclosure for you and give you dimensions for all your cuts if you would like.

Yea, my box weighs A TON.

It's a full Q-Logic box, lol. I'm going to take just the box out today, and see what kind of difference it makes.

Maybe I can sell it so I can get the Bonnie running, haha...

It would be awesome to see some plans for box designs specifically for our vehicles. I plan to build some boxes custom into my trunk, to maximize space utilization.

Are the Q-logic boxes MDF or are they particle board?
From what i remember i thought they were particle board, which is not as heavy or as ideal.

Something like what I did? If so I could find my sketches and get the dimensions, angles, and such to ya.

Yeah, something like that! I was thinking of a little more molded into the side space, maybe even using some fiberglass, but those look pretty good!
