    P71 won't start

Ok, so tha family P71 is having a little trouble. Its a '99, and sometimes it just won't start. The battery is charged and has good voltage. The engine whirls over plenty fast enough. It just won't start. The fuel pump relay is pushed in (the little red button). Not sure whats going on. The car only has 42K (it was a salvage CT troopers car). However, it has sat for like 3 years. That being said, it was running just fine. This problem has just developed. Any ideas?

Could the crank sensor be going bad?

The starter is fine. The car always cranks over just fine. My old man says he can not hear the fuel pump. The thing is, most of the time the car runs just fine. If the fuel pump fuse is bad, would the pump still work at times?

no. well, not in my car. if the fuse for the pump is bad, then its not getting power, and therefore it's not working. if you put the car in "ON" for a few seconds before you start it, you can hear the fuel pump kick on.

DeeTaDee. It's either an intermittent crank sensor, or it's bleeding off fuel pressure when it sits un driven. Next time it won't start, try this: Turn the key off, then back on. Wait two seconds, then repeat a couple or three times, and then try starting it. If it fires off, your simply bleeding off fuel pressure. If that's not it, make sure your pcm is clear of any trouble codes (read them first), then watch the CEL as you engage teh starter. If the CEL stays illuminated while the engine spins, and there are no codes stored, the PCM is not getting a signal from the crankshaft position sensor, and won't pulse the injectors or fire teh plugs.

The CEL is not on. It hasn't been giving us any grief any more. The problem seems to have gone away, at least for now.
