    new to panthers and carbs

Hey all, just found this place and I'm glad I did. I'm looking forward to learning a lot and hopefully someday knowing enough to contribute some info back to the site.

I bought an '81 LTD wagon about six months ago. Picked it up for $100 and saved it from its pathetic life as a storage shed in someone's backyard. It had sat for two years due to a locked up rear axle, but after a new piece of fuel line it was purring like a kitten... well, ok, more like a really angry monster with no exhaust past the point where the two pipes from the cats join into one. Once I had the motor running I swapped the blown axle for an 8.8 from an '89 CP and I've been driving it ever since. I'm a big fan of both fords and wagons (owned two taurus wagons in the past) so I jumped at the chance to have a huge RWD ford wagon. Its a low mileage car too, only 46750 miles since it spent over 15 years parked in a garage after its owner passed away. Motor runs great, body and interior is kinda rough due to the fact that the most recent owners treated it rough for a couple years before the axle died. Anyway, here's a couple pics, then I gotta get back to searching the site for more carb info!

Congrats on your purchase! You won't soon regret it. I bought my '79 wagon in part to play with carbs, and liked it so well the SEFI on my '87 went bye-bye a couple years ago instead of upgrading to a MAF system. Looks like you got 14" wheels with yours, too .... kewl.

Welcome! Your '81 actually looks pretty clean, looks like there's a lot of potential there! Is yours equipped with the Variable Venturi carb? If so, and you need info on rebuilding it, I just submitted a tech article about it, so you might want to have a gander at it.

Thanks, I'll have to check out that article cause it does have the VV carb on it and I'll probably be poking around it sooner or later.

Say htchbk, have you done anything to that Festiva? 1.8L DOHC sounds more like an Escort motor to me ... any performance potential there?

^^^ just a little done to the festiva lol... like an Escort GT motor, Ford Aspire brakes (bigger and waaay better than the factory brakes), larger wheels and tires (from an Escort LX), KYB struts on all four corners, and thats about it for performance stuff. Turns out if you take a pretty good motor from a 2400lb car and stuff it into a 1700lb car you get a pretty quick little demon that still makes decent gas mileage, plus its the ultimate sleeper, who would ever suspect a festiva?
