I'm guessing with a stock bottom end probably 550-600hp maybe more but then you might be limited to how much you can drive it before it blows.
And to get that hp you would need to modify it anyway

    2009 Ford F-350 6.4 powerstroke diesel. 1977 Ford F-150 built 300 six, 5 speed trans. 1976 MG MGB roadster, 359w, t5 5 speed. 1996 Kawasaki ninja ZX6R.

Well, a 302 can make a lot of power. It really depends on how much you want to pay for it. I've seen 1000+hp 302s for sale.

a 302 will not hold 1000 horsepower unless you give Ford or World $2000 for a R block

I don't know about what is needed to get 1000hp, I was just saying that I have seen a 302 cubic inch displacement engine sold that made over 1000hp. If you can make a 1000hp 4 banger Civic, you can surely get 1000hp out of a 302, it's just a matter of how much you spend, wether that is for a new block or not.

I thought it was more like 400-600 to split it depending on how beat the block was.

The limit is only in the mid 600's HP range. Even with a girdle, if you have detonation, a block will split. Mexican blocks are good for some amount (100ish) over a roller 302 block. A Boss 302 is the single only factory Ford block that you can even hope to survive anywhere near 750HP or above.
