    and now....HEADERS!!

hey all, just finally completed my custom exhaust. no more factory stuff! it turned out to be the project from hell, started out by changing the oil pan, and if you know these cars, you know how much of a pain in the ass it can be. after that, i started on the exhaust manifolds. and wouldn't you know it, one of the studs snapped off about 1/2 an inch inside the head! so out the engine came. too bad i couldn't see into the future, i would've pulled it out to begin with.

to make the best of a bad situation, i decided now would be a good time to change the rear main seal and the front pump seal in the tranny as well. a drill, torches, and an easy out made short work of the broken stud, so glad i didn't have to re-tap the hole.

i opted to fab up the rest of my custom exhaust from the cats forward myself, complete with magnaflow cats. it turned out not bad for having used a crappy wire welder and mostly redneck tools at my disposal (with the exception of the hoist). anyway, here's pics.

they're from Blue Oval Industries. stainless and ceramic coated. great price. it definitely feels like i've picked up some power judging from the S-O-T-H meter. it really starts to come alive after i get the rev's up.

nope, they clear the chassis just fine. they're pretty much identical to the ford racing shorties. it's alot easier to install them if you either jack up the engine or remove the engine altogether though...the same goes for any manifold installation for these cars. they're not exactly a bolt- on install....you'll need to incorporate mustang mid pipes that have the correct bends for these headers. you'll also need to custom fab a new EGR tube to go with the headers.

BBK mustang shorties HAVE to be modified, one of the primary tubes on the driver's side hits the steering shaft. the ford racing / blue oval industries headers (like mine) are a direct bolt on. no modifications to the headers themselves, however you'll need to have either custom pipes bent for the downpipes or use a set for a mustang, as well, modifications need to be made to the EGR tube. i'm not sure if everything in a town car is the same as the CV or the GM, but it should be as far as this goes....

what kind of mods need to be done to the egr? is it something involved or fairly simple?

there are a number of ways to do it, it depends on your circumstances. what i did was take an '03+ panther EGR tube (made for driver's side manifold bung) and combine it with an '96-'02 EGR tube, this is necessary because you need the pressure pickups for the DPFE sensor in order for the EGR to function properly. '03+ don't use these pickup tubes.

for the rest of the tube i used a 5/8" stainless steel flexible gas line (uncoated, available at any home improvement store) to make up the rest. i used a 2' flex line because it was all that was available at the time, so if you want a shorter flex line, you can extend the length of EGR tube if needed. fittings for each side were welded on to the EGR tube, and to a ford mustang exhaust manifold bung (PT# F50Z 9F485 AA) respectively.

other options include taking a mustang EGR tube and combining it with the '03+ panther tube, much the same way that i did, only using the mustang tube's bottom half instead of the flex pipe, another possible way is to flip the upper plenum around similar to the mustang and using the stock mustang EGR tube, or you could just delete the EGR altogether and cap the header.
