    radio shuting off

when ever my little 10in sub hits it will kill my radio. the amp is only a 800 watt sony with 4 gauge cable going to it. I have a 3g alt swap on my car. By all rights it should not be doing this but it does. Any ideas do i need a beter power source going to the C/D player or is it in the amp.

the radio will shut off then start back up (by itself) after a few secs. the radio goes to 32 on the volume if i put it over 22 then it'll be good for about a min then if it gets to a bass part of a song it will shut off.

ummm ive done quite a few systems, sounds like a bad ground on amp. make sure its not grounded to a painted surface scrape paint away if it is. another common problem ive seen is the remote amp wire the little one, going to the radio fuse in the in car fuse block, i always use the remote wire from the radio its usually blue, also see if the radio runs ok with the amp not hooked up. if its not one of these to i will def help u get it bumping.

i do have the wire going straight to the radio. i don't know why i said JVC it's a Kenwood Ecelrion seris. i will try and unhook the amp when i got off work tonight

yeah, sounds like bad grounding to me as well. Probably the amp doesn't have a good ground, and its pulling through the audio cables or something. Could also be poor grounding on the head unit itself. If there is no good ground to the radio, run a wire from the chassis of the radio to a ground point under the dashboard.

you can try to ground your amp to an exhaust hanger on the chassis. Works great for me.

on my 99 gm i took a angle grinder to the metal behind my rear seat, and nut and bolted it havent had a problem yet. I wouldnt go out and buy a new head unit or amp either im 99% sure its something in the ground. if you have an ohmmeter you should measure resistance from the ( - ) on the amp to battery ground. if you used a kit for the radio wires, it should have a good ground on the radio but when u eliminate the amp if it works fine u can eliminate that.

By the way im sure you have a big gauge wire for your ground like 4 - 8 gauge just because it mentioned little about the ground in the original post. speaker wire or something like that wont work.

the ground is 4 gauge for the amp. I had a audio place put the radio in for me so i would hope they did a good ground.

the problem doesnt sound like its with the amp, its more than likely the headunit ground. check to make sure that it has a good ground. in some cases with high power units, a new power cable is required for the radio. turn off the sub amp and see if the head unit is still shutting off under the same conditions.
                          What happened here?

Some harnesses don't have a ground wire in the power connector in the dash. The radio grounds through it's mounts or with a ground strap in some applications. You might have one of those. If thats the case, and there is no ground wire installed to take the place of the original setup, you're grounding through the RCA cables and/or the antenna connector, neither of which is suitable for any sort of current draw.
