    going to a carbed 351 in august...questions

i was researching and all set to do a rebuild on my EFI 302 but recently decided to go to a 351 carbed roller motor. I have a 91 marquis with 3.73 gears and bigger rear tires. I found out that in ontario my car will reach hotrod status with this swap and i will only have to pass 1980 e-test requirements(very relaxed), but i will have to do so every 2 years forever. I will be upgrading in the future but for now i am looking for 300hp or so and torque down low of course for these cars. And she's also my Daily driver.

-what all are the emissions components on a carbed motor? I will not be using a smog pump so the holes in the back of the heads are not necessary, but as far as vac line hookups and EGR type opperations in the motor or other emissions roles? and do the intake and carb have to have emissions components or do they not play a role and can i do anything i please their...to match the rest of my motor though of course.

-i am definently getting a good built bottom end with KB aftermarket pistons and new everything else... rated for 500hp, but for now i will be going with a budget build on the upper half with regards to mainly the heads and cam. Would rebuilt, non ported GT40P's and a XE258 cam do well in this motor. I'll do roller rockers and performer intake and 650 carb also. Looking for a good head/cam combo for this build.

-the tranny will get some work to beef it up and 5500 shift governor, and would it be a good idea to go with a 2400 non-lockup convertor? It will get anything from a shift kit to lentech valve body to a full rebuild...have to see what the motor is going to need.
Finally have an on the books porting/custom fab business!

stick with regular gt40's, they flow better on the exhaust than the P's and itll be easier on header selection

honestly, for you, I would suggest an e303 or crane 2040 or edelbrock performer(they are all the same identical cam, emissions legal/clean, and will pull to 6k in a 351)

converter is a great idea, Id go a little looser though, 2400 will be dissapointing

never mind, since the rare marquis came with a 351w it would not qualify as hotrod status because you have to swap in a motor that was not available with that car. So emissions testing would test me the the 91 marquis standards and fail miserably. So i'm going to build up my 302 EFI with heads and cam and all the other goodies, and go carbed in a year or 2 with something bigger than a 351w or a cleveland since marquis didn't come stock with those. It's to bad I have to play these games because a carbed 351w would be my top pick.

It might be worth finding an anemic carbed straight 6 and swapping it in for a week every couple of years, just to keep the hotrod status.

if you get a set of good cats and tune the carb up just right, you can pass an emissions no sweat.
