    Transmission w/60k, flush or not?

Okay so heres the deal. I got a 88 aod with 62k miles. The car was taken care of no doubt so I think the transmission fluid has been changed before. I drove the car for a while with a messed up tv bushing. I've also overheated the trans around 10 times driving it to 14k feet. The transmission slips for a few days after overheating but seems to go back to normal. I recently did it again and figured I might as well change the fluid.

So should I drop the pan and do it myself or take it to the shop and have them run the fluids through?

And yes, I buy a oil cooler for the trans.

I used to work in a shop that did the complete tranny flush deal; machine to circulate it through, and a solvent/flush also. And we wouldn't do tranny flushes on Honda's with over 75,000. I watched two while I worked there eat themselves alive after a flush a customer insisted on. From what I understand they would do that because the flush loosened varnish and it would tear the tranny up. At least thats what they told the crew. I watched two Honda's come in for a customer insisted flush and then wouldn't drive across town afterwards. I hope that gives some insight. From what you describe you would be a prime candidate for varnish, so if it was me, I would go with Lincolnmania's advice. Dump the pan and replace the filter and hope for the best.
