    Timing Gears?

Is there any benefit in running timing gears instead of a chain? Is it something that will only benefit a drag engine or can it benefit a street engine as well? I know our roller engines are not compatible with the gears, but what about a non-roller engine converted to a hydraulic roller cam? I was thinking that if I got a non-roller engine (like a pre-'94, not F4TE 351W) and converted it to a roller cam, could I still fit timing gears on there?

gears give you more accurate timing since there is not a chain to stretch, plus they have a cool sound, i have a "silent" drive, it was loud at first, but it quited down after a break in. on mine, one of the idler gears the axle shaft was about 3/8" too long to fit under the cover so i had to have it machined down, i also had to clearance the inside of the cover by cutting that flat tab off to fit the gears in it.

IIRC, the 2hp/ci NA 347 some of us posed about a while back was using a Comp 8138 "Ultimate Adjustable" chain drive. At somewhat under $200, it's cheaper than Comp's gear drive and priced comparably to some other gear drives.

I've seen and helped work on an engine using a Jesel belt drive; the entire accessory system had to be spaced forward to fit the Jesel front cover. But then, that particular motor had gobs and gobs of custom work, so for the owner, the $1200 retail price of the Jesel kit was one of his smaller concerns.

Zoomie: I happened to notice that most gear drives that I have seen exclude the 5.0L HO engines and the years only go up to '93 on the 351W. I figured that it was because they were roller engines.

Whatever engine that I build, I will probably install a gear drive since it will be apart anyways.

:cough: Has someone said you need a different timing set for a short-deck Windsor versus a 351? If so, that would be news to me ....

If you follow the link for the Comp 8138, you'll notice that it's continuously adjustable, not just plus or minus 4 degrees or whatever. Or maybe you have your eye on a gear drive that's continuously adjustable?

Important Note: Accu-DriveŽ Gear Drives are not recommended for use above 7,000 rpm or on computer-controlled vehicles with knock sensors.
Any chance thats why the years are a bit off from what they actually fit? It may or may not have any effect on them but...

                      Same timing gear set.

The SEFI 5.0 engines do not use a knock sensor. CFI used knock sensors. I think the VV carb did too?

1987cp: I don't know much about gear drives except that they're more accurate with timing. With that said, the only engine that I've seen them installed is my buddy's 406 Chevelle, and that car is rarely driven, much less started up these days.

Other than that, I just wanted to put this subject out there and get some input. I'm not sure when this will happen, but I do plan on rebuilding some sort of engine for the CV; and I hope to figure it all out before I turn one wrench on that project.

On a side note; I hope the "quiet" gear drives aren't too noisy as I would like to be able to hear and diagnose whatever problems or tuning that I may have to do.

All the roller cars, except 85 are computer controlled (at least mustang-wise)

The gears must a make a bunch more noise and vibration that the knock sensors pick up. Though, not one 5.0 mustang I know of had knock sensors....sooo.....

I think only the eec4 trucks and maybe the vv 351 had knock sensors. We don't have them, nor do Mustangs.
