U.S. southern car. Featured in Old Autos in 2005. Original 302 fuel-injected V-8, automatic, solid original body, floors, frame, leather top and seats, plus all the power options except power locks. 2’nd owner car. Undercoated from day one and oiled yearly. Very clean. Body and frame also excellent shape. 140K original miles (approx. 225000 kilometers). Stored since 2006. Requires some TLC – (i.e. heater core, thermactor tube, and overdrive slipping). Have some spare parts that go with the sale of the car. Sold as is.

Yes it's kind of neat. I bought the car from an old car museum back in the late 1990s. It was never driven and the history on the car was that it came from another museum in the U.S. and was imported to Canada just a few months before I made the purchase. It's also the fastest full-size car I've ever owned!

traditionally, but i know at least with my '05 f150 the last digits on the vin do not correspond with what number it was off the line.

if the OP could post a picture of the door sticker the car should have a late '87 build date, i would think.

before its said that this has no bearing on what the car is worth, which is certainly true in most cases, it matters to me. if this actually is number 9 i'd like to buy it.

it says "Production Seq. Number 600009" and obviously 600,000 weren't built in '88.

They started with 600000 on the Mercs. Fords started at 0. I forget the Lincolns. I'll check later maybe. It's in the service manuals.

It used to be order number. Not sequential off the line. In other words, the car would be order number 9 for 1988, but probably not number 9 built. It could be later or sooner, either way. And they didn't separate into models. It would be Mercury order number 9. So it could be the first Grand Marquis ordered if the other orders before it were not Grand Marquis's. There is no way to know unless you get into the Ford database.

It seems to be about as close to "the 9th 88 grand marquis" as one could easily determine.

Did some research. The last six digits are numerical sequence of assembly. Seems when they went to the standardized VIN format on all cars in 1981, they started this rather than the order number. Ford started at 100001. Mercury and Lincoln started together at 600001. So this is the ninth Lincoln/Mercury for the 1988 year. Extremely likely that it is not the 9th GM produced: it is much earlier. Given that they were making the Topaz, Sable, Tracer, Merker, Scorpio, Cougar, and Lynx, Mark VII, Town Cars, and Continentals, it's really really likely that this is at least in the top three, if not number one GM produced in 1988.

Is there a way to verify what models the other 8 are? This could make an interesting resto project for someone.

would there be 'pre production' cars used for testing and advertisement?

Maybe I should rephrase. This is likely in the top three cars produced for public sale.

Preproduction was used for testing and advertising. They didn't get a VIN. Most were crushed after testing. The ones not crushed were sold privately to product development companies or donated to education. My high school auto tech class had two no-VIN Chevy Cavaliers.
