What tranny fluid should I use?

Hey guys. I will be putting a tranny in the 91 wagon that i have in the next few weeks. I was wondering which is the best tranny fluid? I know Mercon but they make several ones. The tranny has 150K miles and was going to install a new filter as well. I didnt know if one fluid would be a lil better for the milage on the tranny or what. But anyways thanks for the help guys!

Mercon V is great and it's at least semi-synthetic if not fully synthetic, but it might not be worth the extra money if it's just going in a stock transmission. Standard dex/merc in whatever brand you prefer will be just fine. I've bought the Wal-Mart house brand Dex/Merc in the gallon jug and it's been just fine for 20k miles.

Ford updated their fluid reccomendations for the AOD family to Mercon V. I have Walmart Merc/Dex in my car though. Probably next change I'll swap it over.

IIRC, I used Coastal DexMerc when I did the tranny fluid change on the Cavalier. Didn't seem worth the expense of getting something fancier, though I'll admit that shifts have seemed a little softer since then.

The Vic has Mobil 1 in its tranny, but I've not changed it myself since I've had it. Might want to consider it, though.....

In the '87 wagon, I recall just using store-brand Mercon/Dextron III.

With 150K miles on the 'new' tranny....I'd just shove some dextron III in it. I know too well what the O/D bands and direct clutches look like in AOD's this old....

no special suggestions. I believe he told me it had regular Dex3/Merc in it. I believe your car has Merc V in it.

While this may be true, and I'm sure transmission life and behavior are improved with the synthetic fluid, I dunno if I'm convinced it's necessary with regular service. Regular service with Dex/Merc has lasted my 91 AOD (no cooler) for nearly 200k. And it behaves beautifully.

Okay guys... I know its been awhile and I still havent got that darn tranny in yet. But i'm getting very close to do it. I wanted to do it after the holidays...

But good news is I pulled out a rebuilt AOD out of and 89 cv. I'm unsure of the miles on this one but the fluid smelled nice and looked nice and red. My other 150K mile tranny had brown fluid... I trust this one a bit better plus I am going to run Mercon V through it. Maybe it'll extend some life to it. idk... but just a quick dumb question. How many quarts of fluid should I get? I cant remember. It seems like 12 or something??? idk that may be way off. I cant remember I know it's a lot though.

takes right around 12. Might want to pick up 13 just in case.
