I -am- dropping a W408 in... WHEN I CAN AFFORD TO.

Right now, the goal is to make the car RELIABLE FOR WORK as cheaply as possible until my truck returns from the body shop. -_-

I'd think you could use any 5.0L EEC-IV dizzy, unless the dizzy gear is different or something.

To my knowledge, the gear is different between roller and non roller camshafts.

I done seen it with my own eyes! Don't remember the cutoff for non rollers, 85 was the last year? Non roller, cast gear, roller, cut steel gear.

Wrong gear, kablooie, dist drive gear stripped, or some such ugliness.

I think I have an untested roller distributor in my shed, I'll look tonight.

the iron gears will show sand casting marks on the top and bottom. Steel gears have machining marks in those spots. Iron also tends to be more grey in color than steel if you take a file to it.

Aaand which setup is appropriate for an '83? I might even consider just upgrading for EEC IV for the time being, it might just run smoother.

RockAuto, surprisingly, has listings for a dizzy. But the listings are two for the '85; one for steel, one for cast iron.

83 should use the cast iron gear. Easiest way to tell is just pull yours, wipe the oil off the part that doesn't have teeth and see if it's machined smooth or not. Machined is steel, not is iron. The rest of the dizzy should be identical for replacement parts. AZ, Oreilly, etc also carry the dizzy (may be an order from the hub item, but they usually can get within a few days).

DERP, I seriously thought this dizzy was unobtainable since it was a 2-model-year-only thing.

Still, if anyone's got one that was at least perfectly working the last time it was installed, that's be awesome.
