Got a new box, and i'm cleaning her up. There was no power steering whine until two nights ago, when I flushed the brakes, my friend pumping the pedals turned the wheel with the car off, and fluid spurted out the reservoir, so it was low and that was all.

This evening I flushed the power steering pretty thoroughly. I have a little fluid recovery pump, and stuck the hose down into the reservoir, then, I disconnected the line going to the power steering cooler and sucked the rest out of there. Whether I got what was in the cooler itself, and in the steering box, I'm not sure.

Replaced with fresh type F tranny fluid.
There was a bad whine on first startup that quickly reduced as the worst air got out of it. I turned the wheel maybe 10 times back and forth to get more air out of it, then shut it off and left it without actually driving it. There is a noticeable power steering whine.
If I just drive it and give it some time, not 20 seconds of turning the tires in place; is there more air that's just working its way out and I need patience?
Or is it a sign that the 85,000 mile, 22 year old pump is on its way out, that fresh fluid makes it start to whine?

prob still got some air in there. it takes a while. if it doesn't shut up in a day or so, suck some of the fluid out and throw a half bottle of Lucas PS snot in there. it'll shut it up. I fixed my 189k mile pump that way several years ago. Its still quiet.

cool! Just panicking a bit.
It'll be a week before the car's on the road; I have some more work to do.
