I have the UltraGrip on the rear now only because they ran out of Firestone WinterForce tires.

Do you want deep snow or mostly light snow and icey roads? X-ice is good for keeping roadmanners, quietness, etc. with great ice and slush driving, but isn't as serious as a Winterforce for heavy snow.
If you don't drive it a lot, look into Blizzaks. Very good all-around winter, great on-road traction, but super-soft so it doesn't last as many miles.

I bought a set of those for my '92 the other day. My commute to work is 12 miles round trip. My Blizzaks lasted seven winters. Got 60K on them. Don't over inflate them. Great tires.

That's a good tip, I see a lot of them wear on the center as opposed to the shoulders like most modern tires. I think you just have to not drive them too far into the spring and you'll be ok, but life happens and sometimes that's hard to avoid.

Discount Tire had 31 psi in each one, as I just brought the rims to them to mount the tires. I bumped it up to 40. Figure when the temp drops, they'll lose probably just the right amount of pressure. I think they call for 44psi max.
