they make for MUCH better handling over uneven roads.
With a solid axle, a bump or dip at one wheel will affect the traction of the other wheel as well.
Depends on the joints and such used how much power it'll take. Corvettes have it, and it seems to work. Anything is possible given enough time and money.

03 and 04 Mustang Cobras have it. Them boys push around 400hp fctory, and most add mods to cross 500hp mark. Grab one of those rear ends and you will be set.
I was thinking about doing that. either using the rear out of a 03-04 cobra, but The torque boxes would have to be moved. Id like to get the measurements for a Explorer rear end. The 03-04 rears hold up to around 650 on sticky tires and a lighter car. On most boxes id be concerned once you got near 550 hp or so. The bad thing about the IRS rears is wheel hop. The 03 cobras would actually crack the differential cover from the wheel hop. There is a housing brace that prevents that, but you still have bad wheel hop. Maximum moptorsports makes a "Grip-in-a-Box" kit for it but it is around $200.
A three link rear suspension is said to feel just like a IRS setup.
Go read on corral.net about IRS....they get really loose during braking, and like to rear steer because of the bushings. Of course, that's with the ford irs....
Most of the better handling track/autocross cars all use a stick with mods
