I just put in a Pioneer 3700MP in the Merc, which doesn't have premium sound. I have the stock 4 inch speakers in the dash and two 250 watt pioneer 6x9s in the rear. It sounds good but it seems like the stock tape deck sounded better even with the mismatched speakers. Will I see an improvement with sound quality if I rewire the speakers like most people have to do with premium sound cars? I plan on maybe getting subs and new front speakers probably over the summer also.

So you didn't run new wiring? I would run new wiring and not use the stock crap.

Yeah, since it didn't have premium sound I just bought the wiring harness from walmart and hooked it up. Its definitely lacking in both power and sound quality though. Any specific gauge or type of wiring to use?

I would run 12ga or 14ga wire.

18gauge will work fine... use 16 if you plan to upgrade speakers later.
12gauge is for subs!!!
