    Converting rear springs.

Well, I have decided to convert the rear springs to a type that is similar to Duce's new ones, except that I also want the ones with shocks in the center. I want this so I can really have some choices as to what shocks I run, and in the future be avle to get adjustable ones.

Post any pics you have Duce, because I could use any help I can get. When I am done, I would like to through together a kit so that other members can also do this upgrade. My goal is to make this a bolt on upgrade without the need for a welder, I think I can get away with this, while also improving the geometry. Drilling will likely be required.

All you need is the coilover kit and the spring. Spend a bit more and get the adjustable shocks. Everything will bolt into the stock shock location.

But there seems to be a whole crap load more options as far as shocks go if I use ones with the Heim joints on each end. So I wanted to covert to that, and figured if i am going to convert to that I might as well covert to the whole deal of the coil/shock combo setup.

you will have to weld to the frame crossmember above the axle. you would use a shock mount like This it would have top be welded to the crossmember.

for the lower you could use These to mount the shock to the lower mount.

You would have to find out what legnth shock you need. By using the stock shock mount hole you would need a long shock . if you used a mount up higher that used a shorter shock you could have a wider range of shocks and springs.

You cannot use a coil-over shock in the stock mount. there is no real way to mount the upper bolt wiith a coil-over kit. The easiest way ios to get a coil over shock and the mounts weld the mounts to the crossmember and to the axle tube.

*EDIT* also on our cars there is no real performance benefit to going coil-over compared to my set up. the wheel rate of the spring will not change, the dampening ability of the shock will not change. (assuming you were using a factory shock and spring. This is not taking in the higher rate and dampening of the shocks and springs). Most vehicles will benefit froma a coil-over because the shock and/or the spring is not mounted on the axle. on a Mustang the spring is on the control arm, the arm acts as a lever, so a 5003 spring will act like a 400# coil-over spring.

the advantages of going coil-over is the widely different shocks and springs available.

Thanks Duce, that is exactly why I want to do it. Maintaining stock setup there just isn't many options in spring or shocks. Everyone does KYB, because that's pretty much it lol.

I also did find a source that has 175, 200, 225, 250, and 300lb double pig tail springs.

Check out my sticky in the top of this forum about parts that should work. Carrera makes Street stock springs that bolt into our cars. Im runnign the Carrera shocks on the front of my 85. Our springs are GM and shocks are 67-81 camaro.

I was wondering if those carera shocks were the right length (The QA1s right?). Cool.

Nope the Carrera Street stock shocks.

                  http://www.speedwaymotors.com/xq/asp...qx/Product.htm click on application chart.

QA1, Bilstein also make front shocks. Pro makes both a regular and an adjustible front shock.

Duce, do you have happen to know what the distance from the top of the axle to the upper spring perch is?

Blaze, doesn't that vary depending on the ride height?

Yes, but I am more interested in a rough measurment. If he doesn't know off the top of his head, I'll find out tonight or the next. I was just wanting to start shopping for the shocks and springs I will be getting.

According to Carrera our stock rear shocks are 12.35" compressed, 20.35" extended. 8" of travel. Carrera does not offer a shock in that legnth, however they do hae one that is 12.35" compressed, 19.35" extended, 7" of travel. using a upper mount would put the shock in just about the same posistion. Im looking to go to coil-over carreras. should only cost around $200 since i already have the springs, and adjusters.

Huh? you giving up on the adjuster/spring setup in the stock location?

well since the stock perches are nowhere near inline with each other. That means that the lower perch will have to offset forward 3-4 inches. Using the stock locations the spring will not sit anywhere near flat.
