Cleaning the outside of a gas tank???

Anyone have any ideas on how to clean up the outside of a gas tank??? This tank I got today for the '84 is clean as a whistle inside... and NO DENTS... but outside... it is a mess!!! Whoever owned the car lived on a dirt road... Red clay road... And the car evidently was leaking oil from somewhere... so the combination of the two... well you can imagine what is caked on there!!! Already tried...

Purple power... took some of the stuff off....

taking it to the car wash and pressure blasting it.,..using their engine cleaner stuff...

I have scraped most of the thick stuff off.... just need to get it clean enough to paint it.... (Silver, like original)

    Tom!

How about scrapping off as much as you can and then use some paint thinner and a scotch brite pad? Otherwise you could try some oven cleaner. Or you could try a brass wire brush.

I don't remember but Blaze took out his tank and cleaned it up REALLY nice. I forgot what he said he used. You should PM him.

I used this to do the entire clean up. These nylon wire wheels on the end of a fairly high speed drill seem to do really good. I used one of the New Dewalt 18volt 3 speed drills in the highest speed setting. Then I just did a quick spray of carb cleaner just to prep for paint.

I also used this to clean the nooks.

Oh yea, like Home Depot or Lowes should both have them, they are pretty common.

Ace had them... your right--- they do work good... started to run out of light today... so I will continue on it Thursday.... after I go get the trunk floor out the rest of the way at the junkyard....

Ace also had the zinc style silver galvenizing paint for it.... so after I clean it good... i will repaint it with the zinc paint... so it should look like new! (That is what they coat them with originally!)
                    Tom!

How aggressive are those wheels? Would they work for my frame? It has some heavy surface rust.

Ehh, use a steel wire wheel for rust. These are nylon, and are really suited for cleaning, not resurfacing. One more good use for these is paint removal, it's a little slow, but unlike sanding, it does not sand away any metal once you are through the paint.

but it would have probably cost more in shipping than it is worth... since they are quite large.... but thanks anyway! Tom....
