View Full Version : 521 Stroker Motor for the Fairlane

I started ordering parts for a 521 Stroker motor for my Fairlane. I'll have another .030 460 block on an engine stand, a Scat Industries 521 Stroker rotating assembly, balanced for the internally balanced engine, H-beam rods, JE forged aluminum pistons, which are made just for the new Kaase designed aluminum SCJ heads, that have a different valve location than the traditional 385 series heads. I'm shooting for 600HP, and 600+ ft.lbs of torque, which Desktop Dyno puts me in the ballpark. All of this with 93 pump gas, with the compression only at 9.8 to 1. Not much going on yet, but I did get the block back from machining, and it's on the engine stand. It's a basic 460 D1VE block, bored .030 over, zero deck, mains line honed, new cam bearings and freeze plugs, cleaned and magnafluxed. The Scat rotating assembly has been delayed for 3 weeks, due to the JE pistons out of stock. It's been two weeks since the notice, so it looks like maybe a week or two until I get the crank, rods, and pistons. I'm having everything balanced together.
I went with the hydraulic Ford cam (310/320 duration and .588/.614 lift :geek2:) , and ditched the roller cam idea. I kind of wanted to stay with the "Ford Theme", and all of it is, except for Trick Flow 1.73 roller rockers. They provide the best valve geometry for these heads, so I bought them. The rest is all Ford; cam, lifters, pushrods, timing chain, SFI rated harmonic balancer, intake (it's the Edelbrock Victor, but carries the Ford Racing part number), valves, springs, and guide plates.
I dug up my old Top Loader 4-speed, and that is going in the Fairlane. I scored a 460 Lakewood steel bellhousing for $75, and I'll pick up a new flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate. I'm going to use a hydraulic setup up to push the original style fork and throw bearing. I'll weld a bracket on the bellhousing for a slave cylinder, and use a clutch master cylinder and Wilwood pedal for the clutch. I won't have to worry about header clearance issues with the Z-bar setups. It's going to be nice shifting gears again. I bought a gasket and seal kit for the trans, and some cool cast iron looking paint. It has a fresh rebuild on it, before I pulled it out of my old 70 Torino Cobra, but it's been sitting under a workbench since 1996. I'll make it look new again.
That's about it for now, and here's a pic of the block going on the engine stand, and some of the new parts that came yesterday. I bought the new SCJA heads, G429 "Victor" intake, C460 cam, B303 lifters, P460 different length pushrods for use on the SCJA heads, B429 timing chain set, A460 SFI Dampner, and some other misc. Ford parts. This completes my Ford theme 521 build, except for the Trick Flow roller rockers, which didn't come yet. More to come soon, so stay tuned.

Tom, I know you'll love this one, because ever since I saw that pic you had in your signature of the Hurst Fairlane, I told myself I have to get my Top Loader in the car, and ditch the C6. Since I scored that Lakewood Bellhousing, here's the old Top Loader out of my 70 Torino Cobra, that's going in the Fairlane. Thanks for the inspiration! :) It the big spline 1 3/8 X 10 input, 31 spline output, close ratio. The pic is a little crappy, but I'll shoot a new one when I do the gaskets, seals, and repaint it.

My friends Billy and "The Colonel - Mark", told me Skynyrd is back in AC this summer. When are you coming home? We are going to see Sammy Hagar on June 30th here in Jersey. That should be a good show too.

Sorry Scott, the 472/C6 combo, is going into my brother's 47 Ford Pickup. He was going to use this 302 with the tunnel ram, but since he's getting a FREE 472, he couldn't refuse. Here's his truck that we are working on.

It should be done by Scottfest, which I hope to make this year. I'll let you all take it for a joy ride. The only thing that will delay me, is that we lost a guy at work who does my job, so there's only 3 of us now until the new guy gets trained. He's starting today, but it will take him a good 10 months, before he "gets" it. Our Plant is huge, and there's alot to know. I'll be building up the motor and working on the car, in drips and drabs. :nonono: The OT money is great, it pays for the toys, but it's too much. Oh well, I'll keep you posted.

Im sure he has drag rims, he'd fling the silver paint off the hpp's.
PatFromJersey

I have drag radials mounted on the HPP's, and they hook up very well. I may go to steel rims again, because I want to get a bigger drag radial back there. I haven't updated the past few weeks of working on her, so here she goes.
After a few long months out of commission, I finally started working on my 521. I painted the block Dark Ford Blue, and checked the bearing clearances and crank end play. I was happy that every one of the main and rod bearings had .002" of clearance. The crank end play was .005". It's nice to be working in the garage again. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/cool_shades.gif This is for a mostly street engine, and 6000rpm max. I took the time to plasti-gauge each rod bearing, as well as the mains.
Every one looked just like this pic.
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521158.jpg
I used a dial indicator to measure the crank end play.
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521168.jpg
I finally attached the oil pump (M84BHV), to check the clearance with the Canton Main Support, and the 15-750 pan and 15-751 pickup clearance. I had to do a little grinding on two areas of the support with a die grinder and file, to allow the pump to sit flush on the block. Once those areas were cleared, the pump cleared one of the main bolts underneath the pump too. Here's a couple pics of where it was hitting, and my clearance after.

http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521205.jpg
My only disappointment, was that the pan wouldn't sit flush with the windage tray attached. The tray is too high, and it bottoms out on the pan towards the rear, before it sits flush. I thought this was a matched set? http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/wtf2.gif
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521176.jpg
I test fit the older Lakewood bellhousing I bought off someone, and checked the fitment of the TO bearing and clutch fork. I had to "manipulate" the fork opening some to clear, but I didn't mind since it was opened up wider when I bought it. I'll be running a hydraulic clutch setup, with a slave cylinder mounted ahead of the fork. I'm going to have to cut the fork, and make up a new pivot point for the slave cylinder rod. That will be the fun part. I have to do this, because the fork won't clear my headers as is. Anyway, I wired brushed the loose stuff, degreased it, and sprayed some cast iron paint on it. I have all new seals and gaskets to put it too. The insides were rebuilt a long time ago, and it was shifting smoothly when I took it out of my old 70 Torino Cobra about 10 years ago. It's the big spline in/out, close ratio. It's going to be nice grabbing the gears again. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/cool_shades.gif

I have a little more "trimming" to do on the windage tray, so I haven't given up hope. I'd really like to make that fit, but it's going to be close. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/wtf2.gif
I picked up this neet piston install tool made by ARP, for .030 460 (4.390" bore). It tapers down nicely to close the rings to fit inside the bore. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/cool_shades.gif
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521316.JPG
I just need to modify the windage tray, then I can bolt on the oil pan, run some oil through the system using a drill, and then I'll bolt the intake on after that. Here's a pic, with all the valves adjusted and ready to go. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/cool_shades.gif She sure looks purdy. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I hope to get that engine and trans out of the Fairlane soon, so I can get this baby fired up.

http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521334.JPG
I was a little disappointed my Canton windage tray, when bolted to the Canton main support, didn't fit under my Canton 15-750 deep front sump pan. It was hitting the shallow back end of the pan and sides. However, thanks to a block of wood and a hammer to flatten it down some, a Sharpie marker, a drill to relocate three holes, and a sawzall to trim the edges of the tray, to make it all fit nicely. :hacksaw:
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521343.JPG
I also installed the one piece Ford Racing pan gasket. I used a Unibit to enlarge the four corner stud holes, and then mounted the pan.

I hit a snag with the stock style chrome valve covers. The baffles are hitting the rocker arms. I wish those taller Ford Racing aluminum valve covers would work, but they would hit my brake master cylinder. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/wtf2.gif
I took my brother's new Moroso valve covers instead. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif They are 3 1/2" tall, just clear my brake master cylinder, and I'm going to use an emblem I took off one of my old valve covers, to lose that Moroso name. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif I ran some oil in the engine, by turning the pump with a drill. I have 75psi and she's flowing nicely through the pushrods. I bolted on the valve covers for good, but I didn't torque down the intake, because I have a hole to tap threads into to plug it up. It's the bypass tube hole for using a mechanical water pump. I forgot all about getting a 3/8 NPT tap to do that. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Thank you Sir. I went with red on the electric water pump, because it will match the red billet MSD distributor and I'll have red wires. I also have a red anodized K&N X-treme air cleaner lid. The engine sort of has that American red-white (silver)-blue theme. :usa:

Thank you mercenvy and all the nice Mangs that posted. I'll take a picture of the spray can when I go over my Dad's after work today. I didn't mess around with it the past two days, so I'm going to get that intake on this afternoon. I'm going to start pulling parts out of the Fairlane, so I can pull the 472 out. Once I get all that out, I'm going to paint the engine compartment and make it look purdy. I won't have the new engine in for at least another month, because I used up my flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate money while out of work the past two months after surgery. So what do you do for a living? Sounds like you kind of enjoy it, and that you get paid well.
I work for Shell Oil Company as an Operations Coordinator, and I run a crew of 5 Operators. I love my job, could work there any amount of hours, and never get tired of the work or job mentally, just physically. I am Blessed with the job I have, and couldn't picture myself doing anything else. To put it in a nut Shell (so to speak), we blend gasoline, prep Jet A fuel for airports, diesel fuel for cars-trucks-homes, and we are the largest hub on the East Coast for Ethanol. This stuff comes in on railcars, barges, and ships. We also have pipelines that come in and out of the Plant, and there's never a dull moment. It's a very dangerous job, but the pay is great, and I can pretty much write my own check. This year will be one of my best, and I was out for two months after surgery. I just worked my last three days off, and made 40 hours in OT. Life is good.

Thanks Scott. To me "awhile" is a week off from work. I go back Oct 2nd. I'll be working just about everyday getting the Fairlane to run by next weekend. I've only had 4 days off to work on it since Aug 7th, so I have to get that done. I'll make it out to the shop one day for sure. I'd like to try out your keg setup, and chit chat for awhile.

Looks nice, I'm going to be doing a T5 install in the Vic this winter. I'd like to use a hydraulic clutch as well, so if you don't mine me asking how much that cost? And is it a complete kit ofr just the clutch fork actuator?

It's an assortment of parts Blaze, so I'll break down for you what I bought.
The slave cylinder on the bellhousing was $50, and the rod end was $20.
I'm using a Wilwood clutch pedal which was $57, and the master cylinder for that was $67.
I also bought a 3 foot braided high pressure line which was $17. I hope it all works, because on paper it should.

Okay, little update tonight. Here's what's been going on since my last post. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I spent 2 1/2 hours bead blasting my headers, and my brother's shorty headers. I picked up some Eastwood High Temp Header Coating, so I hope this stuff holds up. At least it will look good for the photo shoot. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I finished up welding some bar stock to mount the clutch slave cylinder, and welded up the clutch fork to smooth it out, and repainted it. I'll post a pic tomorrow of the newly painted red Lakewood Scattershield, with my hydraulic clutch setup. I hope this works nice, because I had this idea in my head for months now.
I mounted the slave cylinder to the bar stock, and drilled and tapped a hole for a 3/8 course thread bolt.
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521462.jpg
Since the bar stock was straight and the bellhousing is curved, I used this little jewel to find out how much I had to grind the bar stock to meet the curvature for welding. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif

Thanks Blaze. Here's some more updates from last night and today. I figured out my radiator mounts and "hood latchless" crossmember. I also mounted the Wilwood clutch pedal and master cylinder. I used an existing hole from the factory clutch rod, so I didn't have to drill a big hole for this setup. I don't know how the heck I would have done that anyway, because there's no room to drill at all. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif I had just enough room to drill the two bolt holes for the Wilwood pedal.
Here was my dilema, I needed to move the radiator forward a few inches to make some room, and re-connect the crossmember piece that use to be there. I solved both problems by fabricating my own mount, that serves the dual purpose of supporting the radiator at the top too. I made new lower mounts and welded them to the front subframe, but I didn't take a pic of that. If I ever need to pull the motor again, I can simply unbolt everything, and I won't have to lift the motor over this cross piece again. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/cool_shades.gif
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521494.jpg
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521493.jpg
I used 3/16" steel, and this part of the radiator is not pulled in by the fans. The front of the hood also covers this brace, so it can't be seen from the front.
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521490.jpg
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521491.jpg
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521492.jpg
All of this received a fresh coat of Eastwood underhood paint, so it will look purdy when I bolt it back on for the final time.
Next I worked on the clutch setup. I used the existing hole from the factory, and just had to make a small notch over the top bolt, from inside the engine compartment. I would have like it over a little to the left, but I don't think I could have drilled a big enough hole for the master cylinder bore to pass through. It feels pretty good inside while sitting down, so I should be okay. I need to cut off about an inch more off the brake pedal, but all my sawzall blades were bad. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Here's a few pics of that.....

I still have to prep the engine compartment for paint, pull the seats and carpet to make the hole for the shifter, and then install the engine. I hope I can get this done by Sunday. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif It's back to work on Monday, and I don't know when I'll get another day off. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/nonono2.gif

I swear I posted already, but I still don't see my post, weird stuff going on. Pat, why cut the strut towers like that?
It makes it a little easier to get to the header bolts, and spark plug changes. Although the plugs were easy to get to before I cut them, the header bolts were a PITA. I had to use long extensions with swivel sockets from the bottom, and some at the top could only be tightened a small turn at a time.
I finished dialing in the Lakewood bellhousing, and bolted up the trans. I wanted to mount the shifter on tonight, but they sent 3/8 bolts to mount the plate to the tailhousing, instead of 5/16 bolts. http://460ford.com/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif I picked up the right bolts before Lowe's closed at 10pm. I even test fit the back two header tubes and everything clears nicely. I won't be able to do much more now, until next week. I have to go to Houston, TX for a week, so I hope to finish it the weekend I come back. Here's a couple pics. http://460ford.com/images/smiles/icon_cool.gif

I'm using Trick Flow 1.73 roller rockers. This is the only part of the valvetrain that is not Ford. These rocker arms provided the best geometry for the SCJ heads. I was going to use the Ford (Crane) roller rockers, but they were ALOT more than the Trick Flows. The Ford ones are Cranes, but anodized blue. The same as the Crane Gold.
Here's some progress from what little weekend time I had. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif I should have it started to break in the cam tomorrow, but I won't be able to drive it until I get the driveshaft shortened. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif I thought I'd just make it and luck out, but the driveshaft is 1.5" too long. My center to center with the C6 in there, was 54.5", and with the 4-speed in there, I need 53". I'll take it up to the guy who made it for me, and have him cut it, and re-balance it. I'll have him put on new U-joints, since these have seen some drag strip action over the past few years. I'm going to hunt down the fitting I need for the clutch master cylinder this morning, hook up the exhaust, wire what's left in the engine compartment, trim the fuel line to the carb since I relocated the inlet behind the carb to clean up the front, put in the radiator and my new upper support bracket with hood latch delete. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I should have it started by tomorrow, because I'm quitting early today to watch the NY Giants on Monday Night Football with an old neighbor friend and family. I'll post back then........
Here's the engine finally off the cherry picker. I put it in with the trans attached, so it was a piece of cake. I'm glad I notched the shock towers, because it sure frees up alot of room to do plugs and get to the header bolts.
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521521.jpg
Here I welded up reducers on my new 3" Dynomax Ultra-Flo's. I'm going to keep the full 2.5" system for now with tailpipes, but I needed to get the restrictive Slow-Masters off, that came with the kit. I also welded up the collectors, to eliminate more clamps. When I first put the kit on last year (I think), I made the H-pipe a slip tube, to make it easier to remove. If I go to a 3" down the road, at least I won't need mufflers. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif

Last but not least, the 4-speed shifter is in!!!!!!!! http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif I have to come up with a trim piece of carpet where that blue towel template is laying now, to cover up where the old B&M auto shifter was and the carpet was cut. I may just order another carpet for it, because I wanted darker blue anyway. This will get me by for now. The shifter is in a perfect spot, and I'm impressed how Hurst seemed to shorten the throws on the Competition Plus shifters. My Dad's is the same shifter in his Falcon, that I had on my Torino, and throws are alot farther.

Just a little update on my hydraulic clutch setup. I finally finished it last night, after gettting the correct fitting for the master cylinder. I need to add a bracket to the top of the pedal bracket, to support it just a little bit more than the two bolts I have in there already. I had plenty of adjustment on the ball and socket setup on the slave cylinder. Here's a short 15 second, 1.4meg video of the movement. I also made up a new throttle linkage setup, using two ball and socket 1/4-20 fittings, and then making it look good with some brass tubing I had laying around. I picked up my driveshaft from the shop who made it a few years back, because I need it shortened 1.5". Now I'm good to go. I just need a new lower radiator hose, and I'm ready to start it up. Almost there! :)

I like that brass pipe too. If this engine doesn't start up, I'm going to start smoking from it. I actually attempted to start it yesterday, but I need to shim the starter. It was making a God aweful noise when I first fired it up, so it looks like it's not far enough away from the flywheel. I had to shut it down. :uh: I'm going to shim it with washers, and once I find out how much I need, NAPA sells Ford starter shims. I was so relieved when I took off the starter, and the noise went away. I almost started crying when I head that aweful noise. :bawling: :lol3: :bolt: I'll try again on Monday......stay tuned......:5cups:

I have officially broken in my new 521. She ran like a champ for the 20 minute break in for the cam, and then she idled down with that sound of the C460 cam I was hoping for. I only had one small water leak out the O-ring on the t-stat housing, so I took out the O-ring and put a regular gasket on there. I even took her for a test ride up to 60mph, and she was smooth as silk. The 4-speed shifted nicely, and that hydraulic clutch setup worked great. I have just a few more extra's to put on, and then I'm finally done! Here's the specs on my build, which was the first time I ever put one together myself.
D1VE block .030 over
Scat 4.3" crank, 6.8" H-beam rods, JE forged pistons (9.8 to 1)
FRPP C460 cam, SCJA heads, FRPP timing gear, FRPP G429 intake (Victor)
FRPP 3/8 pushrods, Trick Flow 1.73 roller rockers, CSR water pump
MSD Dizzy, 6A Box, and Blaster 2 coil
Holley 850 DP and Holley "blue" pump
Crites 2" primary / 3.5" collector headers, Ultra Flow Mufflers
Melling HV oil pump, Canton main support and windage tray
Canton deep sump front pan and pickup (15-750)
Top Loader 4-speed, big spline in/out close ratio
Lakewood Scattershield, McLeod Flywheel, Pressure Plate, and Clutch Disc
Wilwood clutch pedal and master cylinder, CNC slave cylinder
Stock clutch fork and TO bearing

Thanks guys! I haven't had any time with the car since Nov 2nd, when I started this run at work with no days off until this coming Saturday. :bawling: I did add another 75 hours of OT, so that money is going to upgrade my whole fuel system, from fuel cell to carb fittings. The Holley blue pump is just a little too small, and when I end up getting the Vortech one day, I'll have the fuel system covered. It will be overkill for now (Magnafuel Pro Star 500 pump), but leaves me alot of room to grow. :screwy: :5cups:
Tom, I bought my 521 rotating assembly through this guy Barry at http://www.survivalmotorsports.com He was great to deal with, and even helped me get the special JE Pistons needed for the new Ford SCJA heads, which have the valves located differently than stock cast iron heads. He normally sells the kit with Probe forged pistons. The 521 kit I bought was $1910.00, which included balancing and shipped to my door. This is a great price for the Scat rotating assembly. It comes with a Scat 4.3" stroke crank, Probe .030 forged aluminum pistons, Scat 6.8" h-beam rods, ring kit, bearing kit, floating wrist pins and spiro locks, ARP/Scat spec'd rod bolts, and I think that's it off the top of my head. Sure you can find cheaper on e-bay, but most don't include balancing which can be expensive if it's a poor forging. Eagle makes a pretty good kit too, but they didn't have an internally balanced 521 kit at the time I bought mine. If you are serious about a 460 stroker kit, check out and join this site here http://www.460ford.com These guys are 460+ cubic inch experts, and many of your questions will be answered in the SEARCH or just post a question. I wouldn't have built mine by myself, if this site didn't exist. :headbang: If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask me, since I've been there done that. Better yet, said exhaust is getting replaced by side exiting setup, 2.5" off the headers with my favorite dual 3" tips right behind the front tires, basically headers with side turns, no mufflers obviously... I'd hate to be the ricer sitting next to it with the windows rolled down when the light goes green :D

It's a Ford Racing C460 cam. I wanted to stay with the whole Ford theme, and this cam was actually a little "hotter" than the catalog had it. Here's a shot of the specs. This is the biggest hydraulic lifter cam that Ford has for the 460.

Tom, I looked at the SF07 dates, and that weekend is my 12-hour shift weekend. If it was on the next weekend, I'd be off. I'll try my best to get someone to work for me at least for that Saturday, but one guy is already on vacation that week.
MeLikeyStripperChicks, this was a dream engine to build, and this past year it was now or never for me. I had a nice bonus check in the beginning of the year, and I had a killer year for OT, due to being one man down at work for 3/4 of the year. I lived at work. At least I can look at something that made it all worth it. I spent alot on this setup, but everything is right. I can't wait to take it to the dyno and track, after the suspension and fuel system is done.
Thanks everyone else for the props.

Pat, where did you get that shifter?
I want one just like it.
That is a Hurst Competition Plus shifter for a 66-70 Fairlane/Torino. I bought it from Summit.
I haven't posted much with the car, so here's a few more things I've done. I rebuilt the whole front end, so now it rides like a new car. I also upgraded the fuel system to handle all that power. She really sets you back in the seat now. I also had my fuel bowl levels too high, so after a little adjustment, she idles alot better now with quicker and crisper throttle response. I'm going to a Big Block Ford bash down in Owensboro, KY the last weekend in April, so I'll she what she does in the 1/8th mile. I hope to get it to the local track before then, but I don't know if I'll have time to go with work.
Here's a shot on the back end. I have -12 line feeding the pump, and -10 all the way to the regulator up front. It has a built in -08 return directly on the discharge side of the pump, back into the tank. I added an -08 vent line with rollover valve. I hope I don't have to see if that works. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/ohdear.gif
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521582.jpg
I relocated the coil to the other side, under the MSD box, but I actually didn't have to. I spent more time trying to figure out where I was going to put everything, then the job itself. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/lol3.gif That big Magnafuel fuel filter just before the regulator, is what took me the longest to see where it was going to go. I had a new MSD coil bracket, insulated with some foam tape, and used a -10 coupler to connect it to the regulator. I have a -10 bulkhead fitting to pass it through the inner fender.

Yeah, people suggest not putting a 5/4 point in until you have a cage. If you roll with a 5/4 point and don't have a cage, your neck is the only thing that is free to move, so the roof coming down would be almost certain death.

Man, I haven't posted in awhile back here, to show my trip down to Owensboro, KY for the 1st Annual Big Block Ford Nationals in late April. I had a great time, and the Fairlane is still in one piece. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/biggrin2.gif I only ran on Friday's T&T, and did a total of 15 passes down the 1/8 mile. I just shifted into 4th gear at the end of the 1/8, so I think the Fairlane will like the 1/4 mile much better. I managed a best of 8.03 @ 91.87 I have to rebuild the Detroit Locker, because it didn't lock up most of the time. The wheel that did grab, was spinning the tire on the rim. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/ohnoes.gif I could only get a best of 1.9 on the 60' like this. The truck pulled the Fairlane and trailer like it wasn't even there, even up those 6% grades in western Maryland and West Virginia. If they flattened out West Virginia, it would be as big as Texas! http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/nod.gif http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/lol3.gif I had a best of 14mpg towing in OD on the flats, and a low of 10mpg in the hills. Not too bad pulling about 5500lbs. http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/cool_shades.gif

I hurt my foot two months ago playing softball, so I haven't been able to drive the Fairlane. It's my clutch foot and it hurt too much to shift. It's all better now, so when I get to the 1/4 mile track soon, I'll post the times and hopefully a video or two.

Barry at Survival Motorsports was great to deal with, for the Stroker kit. You'll love those Kaase SCJ heads too. Hi Jason. Those videos are not in quicktime. Maybe you can do the old right click and save to your computer, and it should play with Windows Media Player. Also, are you the Jason that I sent the Fairlane pictures to? Did you get the ones from at the track? If not, you may be a different Jason. :D

Cable Guy called me the other day, and he wants to get a meet up at that track on August 25th. I have a fishing trip planned that day, but it's real tempting to back out and hang out with the crew again. I've been working so much the past two years, that the only time I have off seems to be my vacation weeks. :D I'm hoping to tear into my differential next week, to rebuild the Detroit Locker. I don't want to hit the track until I fix that, or else I'll have the "one wheel peel" again. :arg: I'd love to trailer up the Fairlane and go for broke at that track. After 37 years, it was about time I took apart the 9" differential from the Fairlane. This setup was originally in my old 70 Torino Cobra, and as far as I know, it has never been rebuilt. I had two gear changes done to it a long time ago, 4:30's to 3.50's, then the 3.50's back to 3.89's. I had someone else do them, but since I tackled the 8.8 differential, the 9" is like a walk in the park. I was a little disappointed that I thought I had a Detroit Locker, according to the original owner, who is my Dad's friend I bought the Torino from back in 1985, but it has a Traction Lock rear in it. I don't think any of the guys who did the gears swapped it out on us, since I still have the original "N" case big bearing housing, and they would have had to swap all the bearings out too. I found out that is was common to have the 4.30 Drag Pack option on the Torino with a Traction Lock rear, and it was a $207 option for the Detroit Locker. I guess I'll never know 100%, since I don't have the original invoice. Anyway, I know I have to rebuild the traction lock with new clutch packs, and now I know why I've had traction issues for some time now. It needs new clutch packs! :lol3: Here's some pics of my work.

I finally put the center section back together for the Fairlane. Not a bad job at all, and is very easy to do. I watched a DVD from the same guy who taught me the 8.8 rebuild, so I watched it a few times, took some notes, and headed to my Dad's garage.
I decided not to use the original traction lock, and picked up a used Detroit Locker. Half the price of a new one, so I hope I leave two black tire marks when I have it back in my car. :D I did buy new clutches for the traction lock, so I will put that back together next week. I'm not sure if I'll sell it, or hang on to it just in case.

After putting on the same ring gear I had before (Richmond 3.89's), I installed new bearings and races. I made work with the 20-ton press and did this all myself. I have more than paid for this thing, with all the use it's had. Don't throw away your old bearings, because you will need them to finish off pressing the new ones on. A flat piece will only get the bearing flush, but use an old bearing race to slip on top of the new bearing race, to press it the rest of the way.

New pinion bearing pressed on.
http://www.patfromjersey.com/9inch/094.jpg
I decided to go with a solid pinion spacer, instead of the crush sleeve. To get me in the ballpark, I measured the old crush sleeve to get a starting point. I then made the solid spacer the same size. When I first checked the pinion bearing preload, it was only 10 inch/lbs. I took out .005 from the solid shim, and then it went up to 28 inch/lbs. I added .002 of shim, and I hit my mark at 20 inch/lbs for new bearings. The spec is 16-29 inch/lbs on new bearings, so I wanted to hit the 20 inch/lb mark.
http://www.patfromjersey.com/9inch/095.jpg
http://www.patfromjersey.com/9inch/096.jpg
http://www.patfromjersey.com/9inch/097.jpg
I forgot to take a picture of the 20 inch/lb mark I left it at. :D
Here's the final pinion gear/support assembly, with new front seal installed and everything torque down. Since I used a solid spacer, the final torque on the pinion nut was 200 ft/lbs. If you use the crush sleeve, you tighten down (with alot of effort I might add), until you reach that magic number between 16-29 inch/lbs for new bearings, or 8-14 inch/lbs for used bearings. Don't put the O-ring on the pinion support just yet, until you check the gear pattern on the gears. Most of the time, the shim that came off will do it, but leaving the O-ring out for now, will make it easier to pull the pinion assembly in/out if you need to add/subtract from the current shim you're using. My original shim was perfect, so I didn't forget to the new O-ring on. :D

Here's a shot of the fixture I made to hold the dial indicator to set the case spread. The actual case must be "spread" to achieve a carrier bearing preload of .008"-.012" I used a 5/16" bolt to thread into one of the bearing caps, welded a long 3/8" bolt with a larger bolt that happened to fit into one of my dial indicator adapters. I'd be lost without my MIG welder. After setting the differential into the housing, leave the right side adjuster loose, and tighten the left side adjuster until there is no play in the differential. Then, setup the dial indicator as pictured, and tighten the right side adjuster until the dial indicator reads .010". I picked that number because it was in the middle. Then make a reference mark for when you need to check the backlash.

http://www.patfromjersey.com/9inch/108.jpg
http://www.patfromjersey.com/9inch/112.jpg
http://www.patfromjersey.com/9inch/113.jpg
Now I check my backlash. It was just under .008" which is a little too tight. so I loosened the left side adjuster one notch, and tightened the right adjuster one notch, to bring the ring gear away some. Move the adjusters the same amount, that's why you need the reference mark, so you don't mess with the .010" case spread spec you did earlier.

Thanks! I had a place in California make them up for me, with a custom backspace to fit 275/60R15 Drag Radials without spacers. I paid extra to have them black powdercoated, and they look terrific! :2up: I took a floating holiday from work tomorrow, so I can spend some time with my Dad. We are going to take a ride in the Fairlane, so I'll stop by the park to take some decent pictures after a clean up.

Either way, the '02-ish Panther hubcaps look great.

Thanks guys. Yep, Tom's right, they are 15's. I've been neglecting the old girl for awhile now, so I haven't driven it in almost 2 months! :bawling: I'm going to take it out this weekend, and get some of the crazy videos going, just dumping the clutch and going nuts. I want to make sure my fix is okay, before I hit the track again. Stay tuned.

Didn't do a full blown clutch dump just yet, but here's a little teaser after this weekend. This weekend was just beautiful, so I cleaned up the Fairlane and took a looooong ride last night, and some running today. Last night, I put on over 130 miles, just driving along the Jersey Shore and Route 9, for over 4 hours. Didn't get home until 1:30 am, from 9:30 pm last night. This is the best it's ever been running. My Dad took a neat little video of me, taking off from a standing start, on "Bridge Avenue Raceway". :D Enjoy!

Okay, new update
Picked up some new parts for the Fairlane, so I'm getting it ready for some good track/cruising time this summer. I have a new differential ready to go, so here's what I have.
New Quick Fuel Q-950 carb. Is this a work of art or what? :2up:

Looking for the next nice day to take out the 3.89 Traction Lock differential, and swap out the 850 Holley Double Pumper.
I've never really run this thing in the 1/4, with everything just right. I think this is the year for that. I hope to be running mid 11's and get kicked off the track, for no roll bar. I'll be a happy man if that happens. :D I'll post back when I get new vids and some track time. :ged:

Yeah, I'll have to lower my "cruising" speed a bit so I don't run out of gas, but coming out of those toll booths will be a blast. I hope one day you can ride this thing Tom. I was looking back to the start of this thread, and we are going on 3 years now since I first thought of this engine. We gotta get you behind the wheel. :pilot:

New tech info for me .... what's "backlash" mean in this context?

That'd be the 'slop' between the gears; thats how I would describe it. Usually measured with a dial caliper on a magnetic base. On the GM 10 bolt I did recently, it was supposed to be .008"-.012".
I have some questions about the Caltracs:
Prior to installing them, did the car just spin? Did you have wheelhop? Did you consider the Competition Engineering 'Slide-a-Link'? My brother wants to use the CE pieces, but everything I have read says the Caltracs are best. I was even thinking of getting a set for the Ram to combat the bizarre wheelhop.

You're right on with the backlash. It's the "space" or "mesh" between the ring and pinion gears. As they heat up they expand, so that's why you have to have some sort of "gap" or backlash between them while they are cold. They would lock up if you had no backlash, and drove away for a short distance. Drag racing only cars have tighter backlashes of .008, since they aren't driven for long distances, and can cool down quickly. I did have ALOT of wheelhop with the Lakewood Traction bars, so that's why I went with the CalTrac bars. On a leaf spring car, there is nothing better than CalTrac bars. You change the center of gravity for the launch, and up to 3K rpm launches with my car, the tires don't spin. The car just squats and goes. That's what you want to do.
I installed my new Quick Fuel 950, Blue Thunder Competition Valve Covers, and my new 4.33 geared center section. I took a quick ride with my Dad with everything in, and it feels great! I took it out on the interstate and calibrated the speedometer. I can't wait to bring it to Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ, to see what she does. I think I'm finally done with the car for awhile, other than body stuff. I'm real happy with my combination.

Here's the old valve covers, that made my engine look like a BB chebby....:(
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521521.jpg
These covers clear my brake master cylinder with room to spare. It was alot closer with the Moroso covers I took off. To tighten that allen head bolt, I modified an allen head wrench to fit between it and the brake master cylinder. It's in the glove compartment now, because without that, I can't take off the valve cover.
http://www.patfromjersey.com/521stroker/521612.jpg
I did change out the stock 30cc accelerator pumps with dual 50cc pumps on the Quick Fuel, because it just didn't seem to get going like the 850 with 50cc pumps I just took off. With that change, the car is really a beast on the street. This is the fastest the car has ever felt from a standing start, so I hope to be deep in the 11's in full street trim and drag radials. I'll post when I finally take it to the track. :D
Here's a before video, and it feels ALOT quicker with the new carb and gears.

The valve covers are a magnificent change.
I happened to notice that CalTracs are abundant on leaf spring cars at the track. I only saw one car this weekend (ironically a '66-'67 Fairlane) with CE 'slide-a-link' bars.
Looks awesome though. How are the RPMs are cruising speeds?

Sorry I couldn't make it up to SF this year, since it was my niece's wedding that weekend. On a side note, I'm ashamed to say I haven't started up my Fairlane since early June, when I came back from Kentucky.:waiting: I've been so busy this summer, and enjoying every weekend partying with family and friends. I'm also on a softball league again, so I'm practicing and playing much of the week after work. Oh well, at least my blood pressure is back to normal again.
