Urgent oil pump shaft help needed!

So I started my Carb swap today. I pulled the old EEC-IV distributor out, and was getting ready to put the new one in. I could not get it to fit all the way down into the block. So I tried putting the old one back in. It would not go in either. I shined a flashlight down the hole where the dist goes in, and see that the oil pump shaft isn't centered in the hole. When I pulled the old dist, it took the shaft with it, and then the shaft dropped back into the hole. I had no idea that the shaft could come off of the oil pump, and now I have no way of putting it back in. Is there an easy way to get this fucking thing back into the pump without having to pull the engine apart? I know it ain't broke, cuz it shows in my book that it comes off. I am really worried about trying to get this thing back in. Is there a chance that it could fall down inside the block somewhere?

    Thanks guys.

first grab it with a small magnet on a stick, then take a little piece of paper and wrap it around the oil pump shaft just enough paper to kinda tighten up the fit at the distrubutor
when installing the new distributor, you are going to have to mowe the shaft tothe left or the right to get the gear to drop in the correct position......i feel your pain this has happened to me a few times, worst part is fishing out the old shaft......btw you may want to get a new one......i usually do, they are 4 bucks

It is MUCH easier to use a priming tool or even a 1/4" drive socket with an extension to insert the drive shaft by itself rather than trying to install the distributor and shaft together. You can use a flashlight and see what you are doing this way.
