    Update on '84

started pulling the carpet out of the 84 Monday... Found some surface rust under the passenger side.. not too bad.. just slight surface rust... So i went and got some ospho.. going to ospho the rust, prime it, then paint and use some of the truck bed coating stuff to make sure it doesn't come back...
    rear floor...

I also went to the junkyard today for some small things I needed.. and made some pretty good scores! Found a 85 Mercury Marquis.. (like my "baby" LTD) It had 41,000 miles!! I got a PERFECT trim piece for around the radio.. and the radio.. (AM/FM Cassette) and the ash tray.. all look brand new! Mine had some scratches around the edges.. and the faceplate on the radio was messed up.... I am going back tommorow for some window weather strips, hopefully.. didn't even think about looking at those and see what condition they were in.. hopefully they are in good shape... The interior on this car is like new... wish I would have found it about 4 months ago... I would have bought the interior out of it for my car... I am hoping the outside rear view mirrors are in good shape too...mine are all loose, and won't stay in place....
    Tom...

I found a nice maroon Marquis in the yard that started and ran... quieter and better than my '84 at the time too. It made me sad. Best score I ever found was an OEM New Old Stock cadet blue dashpad for my '84. Paid $15 shipped.

          more on the '84....

Got the three small holes on the side of the center dash area filled today... I also took the rest of the trim off the dash today, getting ready to redye the dash. I hope I will be dying the dash tommorow.. weather permitting... I finnally found a small electric heater, so cold is no longer a problem for painting or dying!!! i also figured out that i will have to cut out the area behind the right side dash panel, for the back of the new gauge package to clear.. Guess this was cut out for the cars that had the Police Pkg. gauges ordered with the car....

Before.. you can see the holes where they had equipment mounted... The FHP LOVES to drill holes!

The rest of the interior came out today... so as soon as I get the rust taken care of.. the new carpets will be going in. I'm going to try to dye the rest of the dash tommorow... then kill the rust and prime and paint the floor... So when the seats come back from the shop.. they will be able to go right in the car...
I also got some window channel felts out of another Ford... I think it was a newer Escort.. that are close to mine, So I hope they fit well enough for now to seal the windows up... until I find some NOS ones, or at least until i order some from JC Whitney... The windows were the same basic shape, and the felts looked like the same size... So they should work for now... to get the windows to where they don't leak!

                Rust....

yah we had a Chevy Rescue Squad that had those type of floors... And not because of us running through the seawater... during hurricanes and such... it was because MOTOROLA forgot to seal the bolts when they mounted the lightbar... so the water just ran down inside the pillars, and rusted the truck from the inside out.... Including the floor.. as the water went between the rubber floor mat and the metal.... So we had about 2X3 foot hole in the passenger side floor. We finnally donated the truck to another department.. They put a new cab on it.. and they are still driving it... it was a great truck, except the rust! (Even tho it was a Chevy!)

AND they "forgot" to ground the ground wire to the truck... so one day we noticed the lights were getting slower and dimmer... So I decided to check it out.. and when I touched the lightbar at the point where the bolts went throught the roof.. it was so hot it burned me... (Bad ground) So when I traced the wires... the ground wire was neatly tucked away in the wiring harness... and never hooked up! So I grounded the wire to the truck... and the lightbar was twice as bright, and rotated twice as fast... wonder we didn't blow the damn thing up....
