Is there any difference between transmissions on any of the cars or is it possible to swap from one to another without an issue? I need to do mine asap and i can get a transmission with 43k on it for $400 from a local yard. If its possible to just swap any out of one of these cars it would help to know. From what ive been told i need a specific one that matches number code to mine or i cant use it.

For a direct swap you'd want one from 00 02. Wiring harness differences through the years.Give a man a fish and he will be fed for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will promptly forget that he once did not know, and proceed to call anyone who asks, a n00b and flame them on the boards for being stupid.

What about the computer control stuff? Is that all external to the transmission or is there some matching to worry about?

I just found the following information about number codes from the following site:
"How can you tell the difference between a '97 and '98 4R70w transmissions?
There should be a rectangular tag on the side of the case. You will find a few numbers there. One of the numbers should be 4 characters and start with F7 or F8. The letter F stands for the Decade of the 90's and the next digit is the last number of the model year. The third character tells what vehicle it is for, and the last character just means it is a powertrain part. F7 is a 1997 model and F8 is a 1998 Model. For example a 1997 mustang transmission tag would be F7ZP. F for the 90's, 7 because it is a 97 model, Z means it is from a mustang, and P means it is a powertrain part. Just for reference some other vehicle designations are T for Truck, U for Van, S for Thunderbird, and L for Mark VIII."
I would guess the big concern would be something like not using a transmission from a truck in a Crown Vic even though it's the same model number.
