I had a blower motor issue last winter where the motor stopped working occasionally before dying completely. I had read a lot about the controller problem and tried removing it (what a PITA!), but that wasn't the problem. I pulled the motor and saw that the contacts where the brushes ride were practically black. I sprayed on some WD-40 and cleaned the contacts, and the motor started working again. I haven't had any problems since. It's probably a good idea to clean the contacts as a preventative maintenance measure on old motors. Mine was about 14 years old (on a 2000 Grand Marquis LS).
