    cleaning fuel injectors?

    Hi!

Bought my car a few months ago with little idea of its maintenance history, so for fun, learning, and being a responsible car owner, I've been doing all the regular maintenance that I can think of so that I personally know when it was last taken care of.

After a friend ran into poor fuel economy with a bad O2 sensor and was advised to also clean out his fuel injectors, I figure, why not do mine as well?

Now, it was pointed out to me that there's a capped valve that leads into the fuel rails, and I can pump a fuel injector cleaner into there and idle the engine for a few minutes?
Less effectively, I can add the same cleaner to the gas...

Or finally, courtesy of a site gadget pointed out to me, just remove and soak all the injectors?

What do you advise? If the injectors come out easily without making a mess, that looks like the most effective cleaning possible, and I prefer the idea of cleaning them out of the car, instead of idling the engine with something other than gasoline trying to burn in it.
Is it as easy a job as it looks?

to really get them clean, your best bet is to send them out to a shop that rebuilds injectors and flow tests them to ensure proper spray pattern and balanced flow.

If you take them out, lemme make a suggestion, get new o rings. And make sure the little hats aren't broken off of the injectors after you pull them from the manifold. If they're broken, you're gonna need new ones.

the hats are available in an injector rebuild kit, available for not a bunch of money. Each kit comes with 2 O rings, the pintle cap, the plastic spacer ring, and maybe the itty bitty brass screen in the top of the injector.

I've had super good luck with injector cleaner. I swear by mercury/mercruiser quickleen. Yes you have a to buy at a boat dealer and dump the whole bottle in. Like 13 bux a bottle though. I've have seen it do amazing things. And it is way easier than pulling injectors.

full tank... dump it in before filling up to get it mixed in good.

Recommended on a full tank. My 91 had them so dirty it would miss at idle. I dumped it in on an empty tank and drove a few miles then filled it. It does go in the fuel tank. The bottle says it treats 72 gallons but I figure it a little extra won't hurt and it hasnt yet.
