    oil light comes on after about 4 miles

    The oil light has started comming on in my 89 TC. it flickers the comes on solid. Although I get no noises, or any increase in engine temp. I am suspecting a bad sensor. Does this sound correct?
    Also does eliminating the oil press sensor affect anything? I am wanting to switch to an oil pressure guage to monitor the motor better.

    the idiot light does not need to be hooked up, yoou can install an oil pressure gauge a bad pressure sensor would be nice.........check oil pressure hot with a gauge tho dont assume a bad sensor

      sounds like wiped out bearings. My original motor did that when I got some water in the oil and didn't change it immediately. It lasted about 100 miles before the water took out the bearings. While driving it ran at zero PSI oil pressure.

        Regardless of the weight of the oil it is thicker when cold. You start running the engine and it warms up and you begin to lose some oil pressure. IIRC the idiot oil light comes on around 5psi.

        If you do go ahead and install the gauge you will need a funky socket to remove the old sensor. If you will be installing an electrical gauge you will need an oil pressure sender extension to physically move the bell of the sender away from the block (there just is no room down there to screw it right into the block). If you are going mechanical pick up a copper feed line and use the various adapters to fit it right into the block. Don't forget to install the ferrules at the back of the gauge and at the block before you tighten everything down.

          speaking of oils pressure.. what if the lights is flickering but never really solid? and only at low speeds between shifts. highway driving is fine

            bearings are shot......but it will run a long time like that......as long as you got like 2 psi oil pressure at idle your fine

              im assuming that is from high RPM then.. if thats the case then that is from the trans being bad and the prev. owner diving it.. then us driving it at 4k to the shop..

                that won't have helped but worn bearings are largely a combination of not having changed the oil, and the crappy firing order these used that beat up the bearings anyway.
