Did the new distributor include all new electronic components or did you transfer anything from the old unit?

installed a brand new ignition module, swapped over cap and rotor which looked fantastic upon inspection

when this happened to me, it was the MAF. Not going to be your issue unless it was converted though.

Very weak fuel pump would do this too. Can you check fuel pressure? Worst case, a cheap tire pressure gauge will tell you but it kills the gauge. If its less than 30 psi with the engine running, no bueno. Should be 30-35 at idle and 40-45 at idle with the vacuum line unhooked.

Dead fuel pump relay might do it too though I wouldn't expect the car to start. They basically work or do not work, though they can go intermittant and spazz out randomly.

fuel pump is only a few months old and the car is still speed density

Maybe hook up a timing light to see if it stops when the engine dies? Might rule out/in spark problem.

Just because its not old doesn't mean it shouldn't be checked out. Could be the fuel hose in the tank came apart or something.

also a plugged fuel filter can cause buggered running issues.

fuel could certainly be the problem. The "new" distributor, I guess you did not swap over the internal components.
