    Bumping up the timing.

Buying 93 octane is not an issue for me. What's the best setting for a non-HO 5.0L or should I just experiment until I find out what the car likes?

Play till you find a setting its happy with. I'd run regular and see what it wants to run at, if you can do 12-14 degrees on regular without ping issues, I would call it good. If it wants to ping with that much advance, try going to a better grade of fuel. Some cars take 14-16 degrees on regular with no problem, others just don't want to run right at even the factory setting. Hard to say.
