I'm selling a house, so anything I dream is is bench racing so to speak, until that darn house and other stuff is paid off.
So, my goal on my 83 351 unit is to build it for bottom end torque. Already hast the highway gears being a Highway Patrol spec car. I have a the performer intake waiting, will go with the appropriate idle to 5000 rpm cam and replace that evil VV carb for starters. Just making those changes would probably boost mpg on mine.
High torque and tall gearing is what I'm thinking, then move on to improving the heads and valve train. Improve efficiency and reduce friction. Switch to electric fans, etc.
Had 91 F150 with 300 six, 5 speed. Recorded 26 mpg riding around the back roads. Best my current 98 F150 with 4.2 ever got was 19mpg heading down hill. (but that 4.2 will leave either of my Vicks plus pull up hedges)
Love the 300 over the 4.2 for sure!!
Probably should just sell the P43 and the Waggin and pick me up a nice 03 Vick or Marq.
I said that a couple years back...now I also drive a 4 cylinder Escort as a daily driver.
x2 that's why I got my 94 geo prizm

The lack of acceleration the 300 has doesn't really slow down with a load behind it. Your chevy may be faster, but my old stock 351w bronco would drag it wherever I felt like it. Chevy's just make more hp. Change the exhaust on a ford and you will be amazed.

I have to disagree. The 350 and 351 both make more peak torque and torque under the curve than a 300-6. The 1996 4.9 in-line six produced 145 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 265 foot-pounds of torque at 2,000 rpm.
The V8's make more than that at 2000 and continue to climb in both torque and hp. My vote would be something in the 3.5-4.0L range boosting 10-15#, assuming the boosted small engine concept were helpful in fuel economy. As I'm typing this I just remembered the T-bird super coupe engine. Instinct tells me though that it's in one of the many above posts. So SC 3.8, pulley, full exhaust, and a tune. Throw in a 5 speed and e-fans. The car would lose a little weight in the process and you could reduce the weight in front of the wheel centerline, thus improving handling. Don't forget meth injection or a water to air intercooler. Sounds like it'd be a neat project, of course it'd run a lot harder with an appropriately sized turbo. Maybe twincharge it? Any takers?

A 2.3 in a panther!? Well i guess you can give it a try. Before you do that, you may want to try and pick a turd up from the clean end and see how that works out.
HA that made my day...well...no sir it didnt. anyone got any reccomendations on changing the timing chain and sprockets. Ive got em on the way from napa.

Ya know it'd be really expensive and not worth it, much like all the mods I've done to my car, but if you were going to track your car you could twincharge the 2.3. The blower would allow it to spool a turbo as well as a 3.5-4L engine, and the turbo would only make it faster from there. The entire package would again fit farther back with the only caveat being whether or not all that plumbing saves an appreciable amount of weight.

Perhaps take the turbo off of the 2.3L and stick it on a 5.0L HO?
Packman
What slymer said. The 2.3L turbo was 200-ish hp stock IIRC. That means it'd make the same on a 5.0L while choking the crap out of it. 2 would be good.
