Redoing the exhaust pipes (from cat on back)

The current pipes I have are SHORT! The turn down for it is right at the back axel (had to have mechanic find it when doing emmisions test). But it is a complete exhaust pipe with muffler. The guy told me that it won't damage it, but I should think about getting it redone soon. Question is, I'm looking into getting something that will do better for emmisions, but keep the deep throaty rumble is currently has. And how will i know I am putting everything in the right place w/o causing heat damage to anything around it? Suggestions please?

Some pics of the current setup would be helpful to suggest what can be done with it.

Before I suggest anything else, i'm happy with my Walker stock replacement pipes but with muffler deletes, my only regret is not painting it before install.
