    Instrument cluster issues.........

I am having problems with the cluster in my CV. The speedo works fine but the temp gauge doesn't work at all and the gas gauge isn't exactly right. The temp gauge actually goes below cold when the key is turned on. And neither the odometer nor the tripometer work also. I realize this is a 20 year old vehicle, but is there known issues with the cluster itself, or do I need to track the problems at their respective sending units?

The gauges sound like a possible grounding issue @ the cluster. The speedo has tiny gears that fail inside the cluster, I haven't repaired mine yet, it's on my list of stuff to do.... If you do a search you can find the details & pn's.

yea sounds like you have multiple issues, the odometer and trip odometer are the plastic gears stripped out, gas gauge, is probably the float

ANy issues with temp sensors or more likely the grounding issue that was mentioned above?

my temp gauge always sits below the C mark if the engine is stone cold. If you're worried that it's not reading correctly, replace the sensor; it's a one wire sensor on the driver's side of the lower intake. It is NOT the ECT, which is right near the water neck and has two wires. The gauge sensor actually gets power from the instrument cluster side and grounds through the threads of the sensor into the engine block.

My gas gauge also will move above the F mark when the tank is completely brimming full. Dad says it's done that ever since the car was new.

As far as your odometer goes, there are little bastard plastic gears that like to get brittle and break with age. Can be had here:

If both the odometer and the triptick aren't working, you probably want the set down on the bottom of the page that has all four gears required to fix both sides.

The temp gauge never moves. But the prev. owner said he's pretty sure the sensor has been replaced. I work at a Volvo stealership and have been doing business with odometergears.com for years. High quality pieces.

The previous owner just informed me that his Dad has a spare cluster and he's pretty sure it's a 140 unit! SCORE! I will keep y'all posted. Thanks for all the help.
