    Busted Shift Indicator

The shift indicator on my 89 Town Car is misaligned (reads N when actually in OD, etc.) due to the white collar around the steering column being broken. It's something I'm used to and it doesn't bother me at all, but it would be a nice thing to have fixed since it seems simple enough to repair. Both the salvage yards I've been to refused to sell me just the white collar and told me that I would have to buy the entire analog instrument cluster. Is this true? How have people fixed it in the past? Is there a way to order the part individually? I'm considering just using zipties around the collar to see if it makes it better.

99.9% of those things are broken, and the ones that are still good probably won't be for long.

Until you find the ziptie breaks it into even more pieces.
I got my shift indicator cable from Ford. Brandy new. I've found a couple of them that aren't broken. I still have one of them on a 140 speedo cluster...

How much is it for the cable? (and the collar) I might see if any salvage yards have them, but I'll have to see if they'll sell it to me without making me buy the whole gauge cluster.

I took another look at the white collar and I can't see how a ziptie would fit around there. The whole thing isn't completely circular since the ends stick out where they are screwed together. How have you guys gotten around this problem?

wedge the ziptie between the cable and that upright fin and just get as much of the rest of it as you can.

I used a dremel to cut a square into the plastic ridges so I could slide the ziptie through the plastic and not have it go anywhere on a spare shift indicator cable I have on hand.
