The more metallic the higher the number you want to finish with. I finished with 400 on the solid no metallic red 88 in a single stage paint. Metallics I might go as high as 800. 600 is good overall. You can also start in 400 and progress up.1990 Country Squire - weekend cruiser, next project

You start off coarse and work your way to 400 if you are painting with a solid color base coat. Go up to 600 if it has metallics.
If you laid it on thick start with 220 dry. Go wet at 400 to 600. Use a block and sand in an x pattern...aka cross hatch. Spray some cheap black paint sparingly over the to be sanded area. It will act as a guide coat and let you know where you sanded and where your highs/lows are.~David~

Really sound advice thank you gentleman. Popping my cherry regarding painting. Will post finished painting pics for a thorough critique.

Your right, some body work, painting....and more importantly experience. Researching about paint mix with hardener and thinner....have a trunk and small areas. Hoping to that the color to is close. The test paint spot-on my fenders seem to be pretty close.

Paint mixing is something I have not gotten into yet. I spend a ton on the 2k rattle cans (yes they exist) in primer and clear. I also spend a fortune on mixed cans of paint ready to spray. It is definitely something I want to dive into though as it is so much easier on the wallet.~David~

Ah this reminds me of the days when I was a painters assistant. Mixing colors from base was practically life. Knowing which reducer & hardener to use given the humidity & temp was crucial. Wrath of god awaited if clear sagged or took forever to harden up, or on the flipside, if the paint was too dry or clear too orange peely.1985 LTD Crown Victoria - SOLD

It went well for my first time. Got some bubbles(could be the hardener/humidity/water) that poked up. Waiting it to fully dry. I assume I could sand very lightly (?)and recoat with some touch up paint. At least it looks better then that God awful spray paint, should last till I get a proper paint job.

Hell yeah. Looks a ton better.
Little projects like this give you some experience and eventually you will/may want to paint the entire thing, or something else on a larger scale.~David~

Thanks Vic.
Your advice on wet sanding the primer definitely helped.
For $25 in Bondo and $80 in paint, I will take it. As for those bubbles that popped up, is it ok to sand them out and then use some touch up paint?
