My cam is pretty small. 264/270 with 512 lift on both sides and a 114* lobe seperation. It will not idle with speed density. I have converted it to MAF with an 80mm MAF and 24lb injectors...I need to get it tuned. Tuning is a lot of $$. (~$550-$700)

You also need to consider the driveline when you start modding also...a good AOD with a stall converter will be about $1800-$2K. Gotta remember that it's not always about the HP, but how efficiently you use what you have. A good example of that is the super linc and my wagon, both have the exact same explorer long block, with the exception of cams. The lincoln has a wide ratio AOD, and mine has a stock trans....the lincoln is quicker off the line. I need to get a wide ratio when I can afford it.

forgive my ignorance, but what does "grind" mean?
I think this is the cam I was looking at...http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Grind just means the specifications...cams are ground to specs, so the slang is "grind"

That last cam is a non roller camshaft. Won't work in a roller motor without changing a bunch of stuff and the duration is WAY to much.

            hmm...maybe that wasn't the cam...nvrmind
btw MrLTD....I had my trans fully rebuilt right after I bought it, so that's all good.
and the 3.55's were in about 10K after then.
so, most of the drivetrain is new.

              Nah, it's a flat tappet cam...non roller...

Any good grind is gonna be expensive, Mine was like 370 bucks...I really suggest the stock HO cam. A lot of guys are making tons of HP with a stock HP cam. Do 1.7's and an HO cam. It'll run.

The drivetrain thing I was saying is different, a stall converter makes the car accelerate better, the wide ratio changes the first 2 gears to a lower ratio, making acceleration much better. Those 2 things get the power to the ground much better.

The stall converter is like slipping a clutch to where the motor makes more power...

gotta remember these cars arent light........the stock ho cam is ideal in my opinion for low end torque and driveability..........now superlinc has an explorer cam, which has less duration and lift than the ho cam and letme tell you guys the power is incredible
i will be giving lss and superlinc and 5.0 volvo, and gmgt rides at scottfest for a skippyville tax fund donation......come party and feel the power

so, my best bet is to do the Ho cam and 1.7 Roller Rockers?
how much HP would a ported upper intake give me? roughly speaking...
if I had somewhere around 290 hp, I'd be very happy.
hmm...can GT40 heads be ported at all?
                    maybe, just a little bit...?

                      Yes, HO cam and 1.7's....

The heads can be ported...start with an explorer intake, get the lower ported.

Dunno how much you are going to get.

You'd be surprised what a well used 196HP will get you. I was running high 14's...a wide ratio trans and a higher stall converter would have gotten me mid-low 14's or better...
