    {INTERIOR} Removing Speedometer 79-87 Vic

Removing and re-installing a mechanical speedometer in a box Vic is fairly strait forward.

    1: Remove the dash pad.

2: Remove the wood grain trim around the speedometer, which requires that you remove the part that continues past the clock (or tripminder) over to the passenger side.

3: if you have a kick panel on the bottom of the dash, remove it.

4: Unscrew and remove all the screws holding the speedometer down. There are only 4. Do not remove the ones holding the clear cover on, this will keep the needles safe. It will not pull out yet, so don't go yankin on it.

5: Now we need to disconnect the shift indicator cable. If you follow down the steering column you will see a white plastic bracelet with a small cable running up into the cluster. There is one screw clamping this onto the column. First use your divine hand eye coordination and unhook the tiny cable from the hook it is attached too. This is the hook that moves with the shift lever. Then remove that one screw, and carefully pull it off the column. Try your best to be gentle with it, they are generally either already broken, or getting ready to break. *NOTE* When re-installing this DO NOT over tighten the screw that clamps it down.

Now the tricky part, disconnecting the speedometer cable. This is a blind job, you will do this without seeing it. If you look in from the top (from outside the windshield and look into where the back of the speedometer is, you may be able to see it (white plastic at the end of the black 1/4" cable in the center of the speedometer). But you are not going to be able to see it when you disconnect it.

6: Laying on your back on the floorboard where your feet normally go. You can reach up through all the crap and grab that cable. You know you have it if you can spin it on the cable. Spin it around and you will feel a piece of it that sticks out towards the speedometer (kinda like a tab). If you press the end of this long part into the cable it will allow you to pull the cable off. The reason you undid the screws for the cluster first is because you may not have arm movement or cable room to pull it off, but with your other hand you can pull the cluster forward to pull it off. Again don't pull too far as the wiring harness is still connected. But don't be afraid of it, it's pretty strong.

Once you have the cable disconnected get back up, and stretch your back, will probably be a little funked up from that.

7: Pull the cluster out enough so you can see the harness, it's on the driver side of the cluster. Like many other harnesses on this car, there are two retention locks on it. One on each end of it, push them in to remove it. May have to do it one at a time, but should be strait forward.

Pull it out and be sure to keep tabs on the shift indicator cable as you pull it out.
    DONE!

    Revers to install.

I done all mine with the pad on, don't really need to remove that.

Makes it easier to see when you are removing the harness. For those of us that haven't done it several times before. In my particular car I pretty much have to remove the pad to get the trim off.

It sure is good to remove the pad and some of them small parts though and vacuum it all out just to keep it clean
