{DRIVETRAIN} Trac loc on dry, on wet, on sand, etc.

Ok guys, especially those inquiring about trac loc in different conditions... i have results. As you know i put a 3.73 and trac loc in my 91 GM, and had to put it to the test last night. I beat the SHIT outta my car and tires for you guys, so you better appreciate this post. (actually, it was so much fun, i did it for me!). Anyways.....

Dry pavement. Both squeek a little on hard launch, but it bites. A nice little squeal going around a corner.... with ALOT less "drift" than with the open diff. If i want to slide it around a corner, turn harder and gas it up and it will break loose easily... very easy to regain. Power braking is fun, the car immediately slides to the right. Donuts are super easy and lots of fun. Overall... Its the best thing in the world to do for dry pavement traction.

Wet Pavement. Oh my. Wheel spin around corners is minimal if you are driving easy. Easy launches have minimal wheel spin. Thats all the good things i can say. Last night i was in a parking lot spinnin the tires and it began to rain just a little bit, kinda snuck up on me.... as soon as the ground got just a little wet, and i gave it gas the ass end came around hard and fast... even at a low speed. absolutly no correcting this. once is started coming around i couldnt straighten it for anything. now this was when i was heavy on the throttle. but again, normal driving, its not bad. Final comment, be careful.

Dirt and sand! Wow. Only thing i got to say, is make sure you got good tread and stay away from trees. No final comment.

Thanks man, good info. I can't wait to get my trac-lock on April 12th.

Did you notice any changes in the shift points or in the transmissions' behavior when you put the 3.73's in? How does the engine handle the new gears?

It will just feel punchier with the lower gears, so it will wind up faster.

Shift points are affected by the govenor. Lo-po versions shift around 4200, HO is around 4900.....

Hope this helps, and sorry I didnt see it sooner.

hey sorry i didnt notice the question. there are a few things that happen a little differently..... the shifts feel a lot harder, which is nice. engine braking is better of course. and the "shuffle" i have in OD between 3rd and OD when im coasting is WAY more noticible... hopefully my shift kit and TV adjust will fix that. the motor is cranking less than 2000rpms at a 50mph give or take. It was definitly worth it. if i didnt plan on puttin in the 5.0 HO and the shift kit.... i would have gone with no higher than 3.55.... but 3.73 will be perfect for me.

Jason, thanks for the info. After you run with your 3.73's for a while, I'd like to know what changes you notice, if any, you have in fuel economy.

I'm getting real excited. 4 days and counting 'til the 3.55's. I'll let you guys know how it goes and how the car performs.

i can already tell you my changes in economy. but its not just the RPMs. its the fact that i like to get on it alot harder and more now plus the cost of gas has risen. i used to spend about $30-$50 a week. now its $50-$70. almost $10 a day. i drive about 120-150 miles a week total. so im gettin like 5mpg right now. but alot of that is because of the electronics in the car... all the sensors and/or computer has poopied out on me... rough idle and a misfire and im sure im dumpin all the extra fuel out the exhaust. plus ive got a little blow-by. but my HO is almost ready to go in, so im hoping to get around 12mpg. that would be fine. good luck with your car! i went from the 2.73 to 3.73 and it was HUGE difference. you will like the 3.55 i think.
