    CFI to EFI Swap

Began the long delayed CFI to EFI upgrade tonight. I have just about all the parts i need other than some gaskets as far as i know. Got the old wiring out and started removing the CFI unit. Unfortunately, the heater/floodlights/sterio were to much for the garage circuit, and popped a breaker. Getting to the breaker box will be a several hour adventure that i didn't want work on right now, it is buried behind a ten foot deep wall of junk, piled all the way to the ceiling. The motivation will strike me again in a few hours and i'l get back to working on it. I'l be sure to get some pics as i go, and try to remember enough info for a write up.

Not going HO just yet. Will be putting a new motor in this year though, and that will be HO. Wanted to get the EFI part done and working now so i wouldn't have to worry about it later.

what donor year are you going with?? you'll need to make sure the wiring and vacuum hoses and parts match - 86-89 and 90-91 are two different setups.

Im glad you're doing this 1st so I can learn from any holdups you have

PS Im stealing this into the CFI forum once your're done

Ok, started working on it again. CFI unit and intake are out, plus one valve cover. Need to go get some gaskets, new pcv valve, and degreaser to clean up the efi stuff. Will be working on it more tonight. I have been writing every step down so i'l remember later.

you can use your CFI PCV valve if its still good, just yank the plastic end off it

I went with an '87 for everything, non integrated cruise and a few other things i liked better.

Well, i've been running into a lot of problems tonight, but none have to do with the swap itself. I've been putting the lower intake manifold back on. Got it cleaned up, got the gaskets ready, started putting it on, and i broke the passenger side front bolt off at only about 20ft lbs. So i had to take the whole thing back off, get the broken bolt out of the block and start over. The second time i got everything torqued down to spec and i went to put the coolant temp sensor in for my gauge and the corner of the intake cracked and broke off. So now i am stuck until i go get another intake at the junk yard. shit!

So far the one difference i see between the two setups is the efi intake doesn't have a hole for the alternator bracket support piece that was on the before. Not something i'm to worried about though.

              Awesome

Junkyard is closed today, work the next four, 12 hour shifts, so it looks like sunday or monday...

Cracked right through the temp sensor hole:

The EFI manifolds used a bolt with a stud sticking out the top. The support bracket sits on the stud and there is a nut holding it down. The support bracket itself may be slightly different than your stock one. Probably have to snatch one off an EFI car with an externally regulated alternator. I know the little bracket is different between internal and external regulators. You could probably also just snatch the whole upper alternator bracket with the support rod and use it.

Well i went to the junkyard this morning and got another lower, an efi alternator bracket, and an air cleaner box. Also snagged some HO goodies for later; Upper, TB, EGR spacer, Injectors. This time i'l carefully screw in all the sensors before i install it.

I'm not to worried at all about having issues with wiring, its all pretty straight forward, but that will be the last step. Not sure about the throttle cables, that will be near the end too, but i dont think i'l have any huge problems.

I think the throttle cable might be different. I know the tv rod isn't gonna work but I don't see any real problems with simply installing the brackets for the TV cable off a later year car. Its going to be all those little details that are more frustrating than anything else. Wiring should be a simple matter. Only need a few wires from the ignition and back to the fuel pump. The rest is all self-contained.

Im sure the cable is different... but yeah just nab the whole setup off the donor car.
Im interested to see how you do the fuel lines... I was planning on just cutting ends off and using rubber high pressure hose.

Got the manifold on now, without breaking bolts or cracking it. Was sweating bullets the whole time torquing it down, and screwing in the sensors. Back to work on it in the morning...

Anyone got a part number for the filter/screen below the pcv valve?

Should a 50psi EFI rubber fuel line with those special fuel line hose clamps that don't pinch be sufficient?

Got some of the old cfi smog stuff cleaned up, and organized the vaccum lines some. Also put on a drivers side exhaust manifold with oxygen sensor. Next will be hooking the tv cable to the transmission and hooking up fuel lines.

Where exactly does the line going to the charcoal container hook up to the intake?
