    Drivetrain low-speed whine...

Anyone know why most Panthers have an audible whine, or spooling up sound when first taking off? Every Panther I've been in does it to some degree from boxes to whales. Is it the trans, rearend, or a combo of the two? I noticed my Mom's RV does it big-time, but it has a 5.XX something RAR. I found a vid of a slow take off where you can clearly hear it:

My TC used to not do it, but is starting to. It's more like a hum than a whine... I hope it isn't indicating serious transmission wear (being that it is a recent developement.)

I've noticed the same thing, and I think it's probably just because the vibrations that are always in the rear end (even one that doesn't normally whine) find certain resonant frequencies in the body, which amplifies them. You may notice with a mostly quiet rear end that at certain speeds you can hear it whine just a little--I think this is the same thing.

It worried me a little when I first picked the thing up, but I think it's just a normal thing for these cars.

Whatever mine is doing, it is loudest at the top of each gear, and pretty loud all the way through first. However, whatever my noise is, I never heard it before I took off the throttle body and elbow to clean out the egr channels. And other than the noise, the car runs much better... could I just be hearing the sound of a proper-running 4.6 for once?

Seems like it to me. My 4R70W does it as well, but it's a lot less noticeable. Seems there's a lot of sound deadening in the Mark.

It is the tranny gears. It's simply gear whine and nothing to be worried about. That whine is what makes the AOD gear pack to durable. The gears are relatively straiter than most, straiter cut gears whine more, but are stronger.

You guys ever ride in a car or truck with a race prepped tranny. Same noise The Capri does it with its 4 speed. Do to the answer above
Does Lucas make automatic tranny fluid?
Because that made the Capri quiet down a bit once we filled it up with that stuff

Yep, it's the AOD. My T-Bird and wagon both do it, and that's about the only common part between them.

Why has my noise only appeared since I cleaned the egr passages and whatnot? Everything was resealed properly because it runs MUCH better now and has better power and no "sucking" or "hissing" vacuum leak noise. Could it just be engine noise and not the tranny?

4.6 cars have their own hum noise thats not neccesarily the trans. usually only shows up at idle, any throttle makes it go away. its the iac plumbing design, the hose vibrates and makes this hum/howl noise. The low speed whine in the transmission is usually only in first and sometimes second gear, and changes pitch with speed.
