What to try next-erratic engine skip

Have an 87 CP 5.0 lopo w/few mods, Comp Cam w/ HO firing order, headers, accel coil/wires. 88k miles. Very well maintained. I've owned this one for 9 yrs, almost since day one, It will run great going down the road. Then will start to skip, run rough, badly! Usually when starting fron a red light. If I click off the key and turn it back on, it stops. Any ideas on what to check or change? Thanks

I was at a loss until you mentioned the key on off routine.

I had a different symptom, (random stalling). It would always get better with a key off on.

Have you ever replaced the EGR position sensor?

are you using the lopo eec? with 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order?

Yes, That's the firing order it has. I put this cam in about 7 yrs ago. At the time, I replaced a lot of the usual parts, map, tps,. Again, this problem was there before I ever changed the cam. Sometimes it will begin chugging when first started, I'll click the key off, but not enough that I have to restart, and that cures it. For what it is, the car is fairly quick. Thanks to all who have any ideas, or have ever had a similar problem know the cure.

                  Those plugs are overpriced CRAP.

Could be the TFI module or the PIP in the distributor. Did you run codes on it?

could it be a bad ignition switch?

The last time I ran codes on it, last Sept, there were no trouble codes. I know the plugs are overpriced, but they were a gift. I did see a difference with them though, but not worth the price

yes, I changed the ignition switch, it was a little dark, like it got hot a few times over the years, but nothing major. With my tax return cash coming in a week or two, I do my yearly check on it. The car spends most of it's time in the garage, to keep it out of the SC sun. I only drive it about 2-3k a year. I hope to cure it this round.

Hmm, sits alot, has issues... Have you checked the fuel pressure. I know you said you changed the filter, but the sock on the pump could be gunked up from sitting.

Have you checked the big connectors on the engine harness? Those are the cause of some wierd stuff too.

Might also want to run the "wiggle test" and see if can't find a bad sensor or wiring

I run or drive the car maybe once or twice a week on average. I had the tank out last summer to free up the gas guage. The sock was clean, the inside of the tank was spotless. I'm the second owner, the car has zero rust. Southern car all it's life. When I just got it, I took out the computer to check connections, and as I recall, take the numbers off it. The wiring all looks very good, but I know there could be something inside of the insulation somewhere. I maybe pulling the motor next month or so to change the pan, one of the drain plugs is stripped. (like that when I got it). I'll double check it then, but I think it's somewhere else. I really appreciate the help! PS, I know this maybe the wrong area to ask, but can anybody decode the tag off the axle? I know it's a posi. These are the numbers off the tag: VO37A
