    Upgrading to dual exhaust

    Hey everyone!

I have been looking in the forums for tips on how to simply bolt on a cat back exhaust for my 1999 GS. I would like to convert my single exhaust to dual to increase performance specs and to get that nice sound.

As if you could not tell already, I am a n00b to modding my Grand Marquis, or any car for that matter, and to this site, so if anyone could inform me the cheapest and easiest way to do this myself I would really appreciate that.

I have some knowledge with auto body parts, but that's not going to help me doing this upgrade...or can it? My buddy is a service tech for Chrysler and he has been guiding me through most of the modds I have done to my car thus far.

He recommends I search for cat back exhaust for my vehicle. I have been looking, but I am not finding much. Again, I am a n00b to this so please bare with me.

My expertise is in computers and other media technology, so if I can be of any help to someone in that field, just let me know. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out and walk me through this - I really do appreciate it!

I found this on the Ontario Crown Vic forums

"In order to install dual exhaust on a single exhaust model, you would have to install a new h-pipe in place of the y-pipe, new driver side tailpipe and a muffler. You will also need new muffler and tailpipe hangers."

    Came from http://www.oqcvo.com/Tech/faq2.html

Could I get an H pipe from any LS model, Crown Vic, Town Car, Mark VIII? What kind of muffler is the best without spending a lot of money? Do the tailpipe hangers need to be GMQ specific?

Thanks again in advance for any help!

      Added question:

Do I have to use exhaust products for a Grand Marquis, or can I use a set up for, say a Mustang? This question might sound stupid, but I only ask because I'm finding the prices for Mustang cat back dual exhaust kits on Summit a lot cheaper than for my car.

I would get something from '98-now, not sure if the aeros shared the same exhaust or not. Do not use a Towncar. I believe it still has a longer wheel base than the Vic or Marquis. TheMark VIII's H pipe might not be long enough. You do not need 'GMQ' specific hangers. Just buy the long universal swivel hangers. I am going to use them on my dual exhaust set up. Easiest way to tell what stuff you can use is by looking up this stuff on a parts website.

Magnaflow makes a kit for the panther cars 2006-2007.You might be able to massage it a little and make this kit work

Go to the yard and get the duals from the cats back on a 98+ vic or marquis. You can put on performance mufflers to get the sound you want. This is a great upgrade that wont break the bank.

If you are doing it on the cheap most exhaust shops will bend you an aluminized cat back system.

                    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-...=p4506.c0.m245Yes?

There is also this link, which is described for 95-97 application...it's cheaper, but it looks just like the above item.

Its worth a shot..No resonators ftw...But I would find out what size and type of pipe that system is made of before shelling out $355 bucks for it

I personally would go talk to your local exhaust shop. Honestly, they will probobly fab up something decent, you will get it cheaper possibly, you are supporting a local business, and most of all, they will back that chances are and do what YOU want. People seem to like 2 1/4 in pipe on these cars.

                            Here we go

That's exactly what I did last Thursday, Ryan! I got a price of around $500 to convert my system to dual exhaust using two performance mufflers without the Magnaflow name.

Alternatively, I can save $50 and use two glass packs, but I'm thinkin' I'll go with the no-name mufflers.

Oh and GrandmaChris (and others), this setup is a stock H-pipe with stainless steel tips at 2".

Thanks for all of your responses, I'll let you know when this gets done, it's just going to be a few weeks, so bear with me!

Check out some turbo mufflers or other brands and see if they can install them and save money. Remember, any shop would rather get the labor time than pay for all parts. Also remember, Your supporting our economy
