    Best years for 4.6 panthers?

Will eventually be shopping around for a whale or aero panther.

I would prefer a towny but marquis and vics are also options, of course.

I want reliability before I want power, and something that is easy to work on. The only mod I see myself doing is exhaust and maybe upgrade suspension components.

What can you guys say about the reliability of say 96-06 panthers?

Did they all come with air suspension after a certain point?

            92-97 Aero
            98+ Whale
(Besides for Town Cars which do their own thing)

91-95 4.6's like to eat valve stem seals and burn tons of oil.
They also have a horribly designed aluminum intake.

96+ have the newer plastic intake, which will break if it hasn't been upgraded to one with an aluminum crossover

98-00 Are just your generic nPI whales

01+ Have the PI engine which is better power wise

03+ Redesigned front frame with R&P etc...

            05+ Have DBW

Personally, my next panther will be a 95-97 Vic, because they are by far my favorite looking aero.

And I know you said you don't care about performance, but I'm going to post this anyways:

I am not sure about the air suspension, does it just do it's own thing and adjust itself or what? How do the air springs work?

Thanks for the hp ratings man.

When did 4 wheel discs become standard?

                  I have a 2002 and I really miss my '97.

I would get another in 4 seconds flat.

It did burn oil by 150 and the trans died despite great maintenance/fluid changes (TC drain too). The trans pooped at 170 or so.

If i were to upgrade i would search for the perfect 95-96 towncar. Standard dual exhaust, the nice updated interior and exterior. Cartier or bust.

My last car was a 97 Grand Marq, I loved it and still think it's a very handsome car, very masculine. And comfortable.

I had the brake line fail, the manifold fail, at the end a gas smell I couldn't find, a tranny fail (my fault for the most part), window regulators, a switch or two but it was overall very reliable. Engine light was on for a couple years, code low fuel pressure on one rail or the other, it would bog a little on WOT but otherwise ran fine. Other issues I can't remember...

It had 180 or 90k on it iirc when I sold it, no oil use (but it did run mobil 1 42 to 140K and was slick 50'd every 50K). Great car. I did the math, price + repairs (not inc maint and gas etc), just over $100 a month vehicle cost over my ownership = not bad!

                        Pete

I believe 4 wheel disc was standard from 92-present but I can only vouch for as early as 94. I have come to love the aero GMQ over any other panther but the Marauder. I too have a elusive gas smell but I think it is coming from the fuel filler neck. The aero vics are ugly in my opinion I can't stand that extra set of windows. Also The aero GMQ is the most aerodynamic of all the panthers. Aero's are also lighter than whales and I have over 200k miles and I don't burn much oil but I do burn some.

That's all I can say in comparison really, The aero GMQ grew on me and if you ever see a GMQ owned by a guy named Bluemobile/redmobile you will see the potential a aero merc has.

Disk became standard in 92 (91 TC).
Some aero's also have aluminum trunks and hoods.
I don't know anything about bad brake lines, every car around here already needs them by the time it's 10 years old.

Oh, and my 92 burned about a 1qt of oil every 200 miles. People would honk at me from the huge clouds of blue smoke that would follow me around.
