Thread: 1980 & 1981 Mercury Marquis police packages - $1,000

    Default 1980 & 1981 Mercury Marquis police packages - $1,000

(Found this ad on another site)
    1981 Marquis police car (maroon)
    1980 Marquis police car (blue)
    351 W, AOD, & 135 mph speedometers.
Both have been parked for about 15 years. They are in rough condition (they need everything) and do not run. I bought them from government auctions. I believe both were originally Missouri Highway Patrol Cars. The maroon one has a good title. The blue one has no title.
Located in the Kansas City area.
The price is $1,000 for both cars.

Nice find Nuems. Pretty nice price too for two rare birds. I sure would like one of those speedometers.

a grand for the both of them is not bad, figure you have a titled car and a parts car with it. Once you're done stripping anything usable / sellable off the parts car its probably worth at least 200 bucks for scrap.

From the pictures it looks like he has alot of older Fords and Lincolns sitting around there...

Could be a killer contact for some cool stuff. I just need more land so I can pick up deals like this and work on them when the time time allows.

This was his reasoning for selling them:

"I saved them from extinction, being the only person in the area that recognized what they were back then. Sorry, I have fixed up countless cars over the years and never got to these."

Teh maroon one has a Ford bumper on the front.

I'd get them if I was closer, fix one, and dress it as original PI status. And sell the one PI speedo. And package the heck out of it when shipping so it doesn't get broken in shipping like my new '88 Ford PI speedo .

Those are cool. They would get a lot of attention around town. And my guess is might take home some trophies, if they were restored, becuase of their uniqueness.

If they where closer, I could and would pick them up right now no problem. Bring so far away makes it far to expensive for me to do so, (the rollback gets around 8-10mpg on a good day) If he would be willing to donate them both to me for free, I would pay to have them both shipped here, and then fully restore whichever one was in the best shape, back to show quality. I'll e-mail or call him and see what he says. If he really cares about seeing the cars get saved, I think he will do it. If not, then you know what the answer will be. I seriously doubt anyone else will save these other than me, or the rare police car collector, so hopefully he says yes.

I think you would have to at least cover the potential scrap prices he could get for them to make him feel at ease.

I got him on the phone yesterday, he said he would take $800 for both of them, but couldn't go any lower. Which is a fair price for what they are, but once I factor in the huge cost of shipping with that, and the potential cost of restoring the car, it quickly becomes more of an investment than I want to make on another box. Especially considering that I am in the process of buying a nice house in the country with some acreage right now. I would never just straight out buy a car sight unseen anyway. Without being there to check it out in person, I have no way of knowing what condition the Frame is actually in. It could be rotted out at the bulkheads or other structurally important areas, have collision damage, stress cracks, or any number of other BS things that I don't want in the first place on any car that I plan to restore and keep.

It's cool that the car is a Marquis with an HD frame and 135mph speedo, but that's really all it has special over the other models. Not worth it to me when I already have one that's in really nice shape, that I can easily add the 135mph speedo to when I find it. If they where closer I would have no problem going to check them out, and possibly getting them for his asking price. It's just too far away for me to go to just check them out, when they may not even be worth buying. If he would donate them to me, I would pay for shipping, and then they could sit in my yard until I could get to them. It's not like I need another project right now though so it doesn't really matter to me.
