thats why im hesitant to rip it all out. if the car was registered in michigan it would be no problem but illinois has their out testing facilities and they look under the hood.

just to confirm- running a smaller belt to bypass the smog pump will not take any load off the engine?

it will take a small load off the engine. The smog pump does run all the time, but doesn't actually get used all the time (IIRC -just like the power steering pump). It doesn't load down the engine much though so you probably won't notice much improvement in power if any.

In most states if your car is a classic, which is usually 25 years old then it doesnt need to be inspected. In NH thats the way it is, so this summer is the last time my 87 should be inspected.

Funny, I had been under the impression that IL was more easygoing than NW Indiana. Of course, NW Indiana in '96 and '97 was my only experience with smog testing, and my junk was 1000% stock then. One muffler shop there claimed you couldn't even go from a fake 2-muffler system ('90 Calais FWD) to a normal 1-muffler system and stay smog legal.

some states are real hardons about the exhaust and all emissions being 100% identical to how it left the factory. I think Pete said something about Virginia even checking the numbers on the converters to make sure they are the correct type for the car or some such nonsense.

You get a gas cap check and a visual check meaning all emissions equipment that was on that car from the factory should be present and correctly connected.

emissions has to visually be on the vehicle... dont say it has to work

I didn't say it had to either but the state tells us how and what we need to look for when we perform an emissions inspection.

I was just simply passing along the info as to where the commonwealth stood on the emissions tampering issue.

ie: to remove the smog pump and keep everything "looking" right... simply take the vacuum line off of it and plug the line/cap the port on the pump. Use the different belt if you're not opposed to keeping the old belt just for inspections. with my car... I'm going to wait until it's under the "safety inspection only" list and then remove all of that.

Dang, Texas has emissions inspections too?

OP: Sounds like a good excuse to plan a crankcase evac system!

I too would like to remove the s/p from my 1991 P72. It is a 351 car and the s/g is making a rather annoying noise. Will I run into problems if I leave the cats in place for now or does it all have to go.

Just for the record, no inspections in NW Florida, safety or otherwise.
