I hear ya Thain. The V6 is thirsty for sure...my mom has a 95 V6 and likes the gas station... The 4x4 is what I like about it. My dad says as compared to his Expedition that mom's explorer does better in the snow. My dad knows how to work on them and I need something biggish. I am a big guy and dont want to be cramped up if I don't have to.

Wouldn't really prefer a 5spd for a daily tbh...so I have to take a chance with an auto. If it goes I will be out 1700 to rebuild it (mom had hers rebuilt two years back).

I'll see what happens. Nice to have something big and you can haul stuff with from jy's or just helping out family etc...

oh yeah...and parts are plentiful for the Explorers if stuff breaks!

      Fixed yer post.

I've had and seen sticks crap trans in various ways. mine (suzuki esteem) lost the main bolt that held the gear support shaft (or whatever holds the gears up away from case) and the gears basically bounced around and ate the case and themselves up. Another one grenaded through the floor board into the passenger side of the car (happened to an uncle). Don't remember what that car was. Guy I used to know had a Chevelle and it welded the gears together (I think this one was low fluid though) and he still managed to drive it home with it stuck permanently in 3rd gear. Though this one could have been avoided if he had seen the leak and fixed it. I know that typically sticks only wear out clutches, but not all are created equal (2011 Mustang gear slammer recall - case in point).

well ok, barring abnormal abuse and general shitty design they don't blow up. I've seen them die, but it was almost always due to running it out of fluid or beating on the transmission till something gave out.

Unless the white '96 is clean and maintained (whihc you will be able to tell), I'd pass. That is alot of miles.

4x4 is damn nice. Have you ever driven anything 4WD? Even with mediocre tires, 4WD kicks the shit out of anything FWD or RWD.

I have never used or drove anything 4x4 before in a situation that needed it. I learned to drive in my mom's 95 Explorer but that was all 2wd summer driving. I have been a passenger to many snow ventures though where I could tell 4x4 helped out tremendously. I figure with a 4x4 there will be less keeping me from getting where I need to go should a situation like that ever arise.

4x4's are pretty handy, I am looking to get a truck this spring for that reason and because I am tired of not being able to haul things. However I will say that aero's and whales make great DD's!! And you budget is no problem, my P71 was $1400 and its been fine except for the IAC I had to change. My 94 I had was a lotta fun and was very comfortable, as it was an LX. The P71 is a little less comfortable, the seats are firmer and not as supportive. Anyways cant go wrong with a panther for a DD, not too bad in the snow either.

Literally..it stunk inside..was not clean...fucking black overspray from some dipshit spraying all of the window rounds black..like everything blcak on the car was sprayed...fucking bondo all over...they pulled the check engine light out..4x4 didnt work...no 4x4 indicators in the cluster..front and rear differentials were leaking..power steering was leaking..tranny took forever to go from drive to reverse. Tires were completely dry rotted, had lean codes and something else... All in all a complete and utter pile of scrap. Fuck you eddie you lying bastard.

It is mentioned in this thread already. It sure is a big difference compared to my Crown Vic. I go from a huge boat to this 4cylinder paper weight.
