    Gas Tank Removal

I found a crack in the gas tank how do you remove one from a 89 auto zone say they sell a patch but I do not how good it will work.

Remove bolts for gas tank filler neck, pull out of tank. Undo fuel lines on both side of the frame via the clips similar to those on the fuel filter. unplug sending unit. Unbolt nuts attaching straps to body. Drop tank. It would be best if the tank was empty when you do this, because even by itself the tank is awkward. Unplug fuel pump wiring, and undo evap line.

What 86Vicky said. I removed a tank a few weeks ago and forgot to remove the filler neck first. Made things slightly harder than necessary.

if you're not lucky, forgetting to remove the filler neck will also bend the hell out of the quarter panel when the fuel tank hangs on it.

Some of the patch compound works pretty good. About 6 years ago I knocked a hole in the gas tank in a '56 Ford grain truck. I waited until the gas quit running and it was dry then sanded around the hole to get to clean bare metal. I bought some of that two part putty that you knead and then stick on. I followed the directions and it has held fine ever since.
