    Police Engine?

My mechanic claims that the 351W under the hood of my car is a police engine.

    Is this possible?

    #2
Some police cars were ordered with a 351. It makes 180 hp, and I'd assume the civilian model makes the same if it has dual exhaust. Its truly nothing remarkable. The fabled "cop engine" is kind of a letdown when you consider the 302 in a Mustang made some 40 hp and 15 ftlb of torque more than the police issue 351.

In comparison, the 1st-gen 281 (4.6) is rated at 190hp.

It's good for about a second off the zero to sixty time. Roughly 10 seconds instead of 11 lol.

In Canada you could get them from the dealer like that, in the US it was only available on the Police models, so yes it's a "police" motor.

Think the 5.0 was rated at 150 HP.

I can remember an old dude that used to come into the store I worked at that wouldn't stop telling me I needed to find a cop car with a 351 for an engine swap for my car...because they've got the cop chip. in the distributor.

He said my car would be at least twice as good on fuel and probably double the horsepower.

you've never seen the special black Duraspark module that was used on SWAT team vehicles? Good for 150 hp easily.

                        This.

The "cop motor" hype must all come from older times when police vehicles (supposedly) did actually get special engines. Wasn't there an FE or 385-series that had a special "police interceptor" edition?

As for my fleet package car, the previous owner (toruqelover) told me that when it was completely stock, it was far and away the slowest car he'd ever driven. When the engine and transmission were rebuilt, he gave it some very basic upgrades - Eddy Performer cam/carb/intake, BBK 1511 manifolds with 2.25" exhaust, TransGo AOD-HP shift kit, and a yet-unknown torque converter - I'm told it went immediately to embarrassing all the local ricers rather badly.

There was a police interceptor spec 428 FE. Pretty sure Dodge had some police spec 440s too

I think the converters are a BIG thing holding the 351w back. It stalls at something stupid like 1200rpm. Even a turbocoupe converter or another mild setup would net big gains. For reference, the stock 302 converter is supposedly about 1500rpm.

Considering that both Nates' P72s shifted WOT at about 3500rpm, you probably wanted a very low stall speed to get the most usable RPM range!

Interestingly, I noticed that Dirty Dog Converters has slightly different converter suggestions for a 351 car, presumably because the same converter will stall differently behind a different engine. The one still in my P72, TOTCG reported it brake-stalling to 3000rpm with the old 351, and it brake-stalls to 2000rpm behind my '96 5.0.
